Ridiculously slow?

First post so aplogies for asking anything really stupid. I've read the speed guide but it doesn't tell me anything of use. I've switched in the last couple of months from Sky and, whilst I know I'm a long way from the nearest exchange, the (lack of) speed I've been getting since moving to plusnet is massively noticeable.  iPlayer is no longer an option unless I download the programme (over a number of hours).  So only two things have changed - my router and my provider. Here's my stats:

I'm not crazy - that's terrible, right? I'm one unhappy customer at the moment.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

@andykiff
Someone will be able to help if you can post your router stats

  Sync Speed

  Attenuation

  SNR Margin
  http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
  --------------------
  Also a Bt speed test

  ---------
Also your current line speed ( PN profile)

Re: Ridiculously slow?

Not sure about sync speed
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 60.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 17.0 / 13.5
BT Speed test gives:
Download speed: 303kbps
DSL connection rate: 928kbps (downstream) 448kbps (upstream)
IP profile: 750 kbps
Current line speed: 350
If I read that correctly (and I'm only guessing really), I'd say that the line speed is terrible - but yet Sky somehow managed to deliver a faster connection on the same line. Apologies if I'm being thick.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

You should ask PN to check your profile  as they should be the same.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

Hi Andy,
I can see your profile had risen on BTs side to 1250 so I've set the profile on our side to match, hope that improves things for you.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

Thanks Matt - seems smooth enough at the moment and I'll try a bit of iPlayer tomorrow to really test it.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

hi
i'm having a similar problem ...incredibly slow speeds and things such as iplayer hardly workig, if at all!!
we have three computers running off the same wireless network/router ...all the speeds vary on each computer and also vary throughout the day ...one of which takes up to 30mins just to load a page...which eventually fails as it times out
ive just done a bt speed test, result: 13mb
...and also just carried out the speed test on plusnet, results: download speed: 3411 kbps (426kB/s) upload speed: 199 kbps (24.9kB/s)
any suggestions?
thanks

Re: Ridiculously slow?

...oh and line speed:
Estimated line speed:
    6 - Checked on 2010-09-22 11:51:04
Current line speed:
    11000
i'm confused? surely this should a good speed? yet all out machines are running incredibly slow...
we have sync'd firewall settings etc.... i don't know what else to do?!?!

Re: Ridiculously slow?

In conjunction with the posts above, I am the flatmate experiencing next to no connection at all. I have (just about, and with a lot of patience) managed to collect data about the connection on my computer as outlined below.
Estimated line speed:
6 - Checked on 2010-09-22 11:51:04
Current line speed:
11000
BT speed test: 13mb
Plusnet speed test:
Download: 115 kbps (14.4 kB/s)
Upload: 341kbps (42.6 kB/s)
Router DSL info:
Uptime:0 days, 2:05:09
DSL Type:G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:448 / 15,323
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]:0.00 / 0.00
This is really shocking and increasingly annoying as the connection is getting slower and slower by the day. We have had problems for over a week now with no improvement.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

Another possibility is that one of you is running P2P software and you haven't restricted the upload speed.

Re: Ridiculously slow?

We are on Extra - 60GB. Our usage so far is only 13.5GB so its not that. It has been running fine for weeks and then all of a sudden over the past week has just crippled. I can't even watch 3 seconds worth of video streaming before the whole thing crashes!
I realize I must sound pretty stupid (I'm a girl, its allowed when it comes to computers) but how can I check whether one of us is running P2P?

Re: Ridiculously slow?

You'd be running some sort of file sharing such as BitTorrent.
How do you connect to your router, wired or wireless? If it's wireless have you tried wired?
