I have bought a new router thinking that it might improve my home network speeds, but I am now having problems connecting up on the new router which is a Linksys E2500. It is having problems recognizing a modem.
I am using the Thomson to access the internet again and I am starting to wonder if in fact the new router is compatible.
Can anyone tell me if a Linksys E2500 router can be used to simply replace the Thomson, Plusnet supplied router?

If you have a Fibre connection then that router should work fine, If you have ADSL then no it won't.
With Fibre , connect it's Internet port to the BT modem, configure the Internet Connection Type as PPPoE and there should be somewhere to enter your plusnet username and password ( see here for generic settings http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/hardware/broadband-connection-settings.shtml )
Hope that helps

Thanks for your reply.
I don't have fibre. I guess it will have to go back to Amazon!
So what must I look for if I want a replacement router? Am I stuck with the Thomson router?

You need to get an ADSL Modem router - that's a router with ADSL modem built in.
Alternatively - if you are just looking to improve your wifi speeds or coverage, a wireless access point such as this to plug into your thompson router might do just as well.

Alternatively you could use power line to create another wireless access point elsewhere in the house.
