Random Disconnects

Morning everyone!
I've moved to a new thread as the last one was changing direction a bit too much. Basically the issue is as follows:

  • When we moved into our house (1st August) we re-activated the line already installed.

  • Straight away I noticed noise on the line and reported a fault to BT, who confirmed there was a fault on the line (Well their automated checker did) Either way, the next day the fault was 'found' and 'fixed' within about 12 hours.

  • Line was great for a week or so, by which time we had ordered BB through the mighty PN!

  • Now the noise is back - occasionally - and I think it may be causing issues with my router disconnecting. I've tried speaking to BT but they do not want to know!

  • Last night I moved the router (and our only phone) so that they are plugged directly into our master socket, obviously with a filter, in the hope this would calm things down. They had previously been plugged into an extension which our landlord had fitted and it looked ok, but was wired through walls and twice round the world by the looks of it, and I wasn't 100% sure if that was the issue.

  • So i connected our router up at around 8PM and then woke this morning to the log below.

Is this something I should just accept as a characteristic of my phone line? I can appreciate there are probably many people with a far worse connection and/or speed issues, so if I am already getting what people think is above average I shall zip it and surf in silence!
Your views would be appreciated!
James

Re: Random Disconnects

Nope, you shouldn't have line drops at all. If it's still within the first 10 days of the connection we can't raise a fault as the line should stabilise itself, but if you're outside that period and it's still dropping then raise us a fault at http://faults.plus.net and we'll get this sorted for you.
Hope that helps,

Master socket at the mo, although no extensions wired in - i took them out last night. Will try switch to the Test socket tonight and then monitor overnight.
Thanks Orbrey, will try the test socket just to eliminate any internal issues whatsoever, and wait for my 10 days. Do you know if that is 10 days from when my BB was actually activated (09/08/08) or 10 days from when it was due to be activated (12/08/08)?
Thanks guys

Re: Random Disconnects

Ah, it makes little difference if you've disconnected the extension wiring.  Wink
However, best to follow the formal process to be sure.  Smiley
PS They'll probably ask you to test with another filter, if you haven't already.

Re: Random Disconnects

Sorry, this is all info I should of included in my orig post. I have swapped out for another filter (admitedly the same brand, and both are the same age etc) I will try the test socket tonight, and then nip up to my dads over the weekend and see if he has a spare filter I can borrow and try that out also. I should also mention that the cable from the filter to router is brand new. I have also tried disconnecting our telephone as well.

Re: Random Disconnects

Once you have done all the obvious checks mentioned so far, it would be worth while trying a different Router if you can borrow one.  I spent weeks looking for Line / Wiring / Filter problems and eventually swapped the router.  BINGO  frequent line drops and slow performance just disappeared.  It's a long shot but definitely worth a try.
