Re: Radius Log Request

Hi John,
If you want to get a better insight in to what is happening, I'd recommend running router stats - see links below for down load and suggested configuration details.  It really needs to run 24x7.
If you need help, just ask.

Out of curiosity, do these include 'PPP  only' drops, as quite a few times when I have lost it when I have been using the computer, and therefore intentionally checking, they have only been PPP drops, not xDSL?

These logs are taken straight from our RADIUS information, so it shows PPP disconnections which in theory should also show sync drops.

Re: Radius Log Request

Kevin, thanks. I appreciate what you are saying, and understand. As I said in my reply to Chris, this is not unduly worrying me, and it won't until/if it begins to adversely affect my speed, which it isn't at the moment.
With regard to router stats, I already have RSL installed (but not running) - is there any benefit in running that? As regards running either of RS or RSL 24/7, I'm not 100% sure about this - I do like the laptop to have a rest overnight, although at a push I could see if the semi-retired XP desktop could be persuaded to work.  Wink
Any more thoughts?
Thanks.

Thanks Chris. So there is no way to say which of these drops are PPP only?

Re: Radius Log Request

Hi John,
RS or RSL is a matter of personal preference.  They come out of the same stable but have different configuration options.  I prefer RS (it's the one I use) Anotherone seems to favour RSL.
My config link is for RS.
Personally I would get it up and working so that you have insight and information now, less this is an issue having the potential to get worse.  For what you need, I'd not worry about running the laptop 24/7 for a few days - just make sure there is adequate air flow around it.  I sit mine in top of a fan stand, not always having the fans running.  Sitting it on top of 2 1x1 lengths of wood would be equally helpful.

Re: Radius Log Request

Hi Kevin
As the laptop has to go walkabout with me when I go to visit my Mum (every couple of days), and I still don't really want to leave it running 24/7 although it doesn't really get hot, I will install RS on the desktop. I know you shouldn't really be using it now, but it does have a functioning AV, and if all it is doing is running RS I can't see a problem.

I'll set it up in the next couple of days when I have a spare half hour, and let you know when I have it running.

Re: Radius Log Request

If there are any CRT still about, I'd appreciate a radius log from the 25th to date, please, in case the sfi I get tomorrow is one who will look at data to help him/her understand the situation.
TIA

Re: Radius Log Request

Hi John,
Did the SFI find anything new?

Re: Radius Log Request

Kevin, I was just about to post a reply to this thread - so here goes.
Called me at 0750 to say he was about 6 miles away - would be with me in 20 minutes and he was.
Spent a long time with his JDSU connected to bits of my wiring, and picked up the same kind of horrendous errors I have been seeing.
He tried the transistor radio howl test (or whatever you call it), and got nothing really useful - similar static wherever he went round my house - even with all my electric turned off at the mains - and outside the 4 cottages in our little lane.
He visited the local cab, couldn't find anything there, so eventually went to the local DP that feeds our pole, tried 4 different pairs and settled on which decided was best., remade a couple of joints and then retested here, declaring himself 'happier' that he had reduced the error count to acceptable levels.
The poor bloke was here until 1350, so I signed him off and let him get some dinner.
Been up for just over 5 hours now with NO drops and DS SNR around 6/6.3. Been a couple of incoming phone call during that time, which sometimes, but not always, dropped my connection, and a regular called commented on the much improved clarity of the call.
I will continue to monitor for a few more days, but I think we may have nailed it.
If you want any RS graphs, I'll have to do them later - RS is running on the VERY slow XP desktop, so I'd have to drop them on to a USB drive and bring them downstairs.
Can't praise the guy enough, but he did tell me the regular engineer I've had for all my previous fautls (4 in all the time I've had a home PC), has now retired - hope HIS replacement is as good.
John

Re: Radius Log Request

Its really good to hear about the good engineers - we generally only hear about the bad ones.
You are currently  5:17:49 (on going). It's probably best to ask for a before and after radius log check next week.

Re: Radius Log Request

I certainly will, Tony,
Quick question - the engineer didn't give me chance to do any graceful disconnects - understandable with number of changes he made - will this affect my connection?

Re: Radius Log Request

Thanks Matthew - as you say - it shouldn't - and having looked at the overnight activity, it hasn't.  Smiley
