Poor speed suddenly

Since signing up earlier this year, I have been getting 3-4Mb line speeds but, for the past 7 days, it has dropped to 500k! What's happening?
BT line test shows:
Estimated line speed:
5 - Checked on 2010-02-10 07:08:28
Current line speed:
5000
Router shows:
Link quality 76%
Signal Strength 46%
Noise Strength 26%
10 REPLIES 10

Re: Poor speed suddenly

That looks as though are accessing the router through a wireless link and that has poor signal strength - is that the case

Hi drwood,
Your profile looks good, the exchange is showing no issues and the VP is green. I suggest it's proabably as Jim says.

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Yes. It's through the Plusnet-supplied Thompson wireless router that I've always used... Never used to be this slow.

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Hi drwood,
If you could try the ehternet cable just to make sure it's not your connection then you can try changing the wireless channel on your router as the channel you are on may be experiencing some interference. See below for how to do this.

How to change the wireless channel
1.Type 192.168.1.254 into a browser address bar
2. If prompted enter username: admin
Password: CP********* (found under a bar code on the underside of your router)
3. from the left menu select 'Home Network'
4. In the center, left click 'WLAN PlusnetWireless'. This will take you to a page entitled Wireless Access Point.
5. At the top right of the page click on 'Configure'
6. Where it says Channel selction, change from automatic to manual. This will allow you to change the wireless channel which there are 13 of.
7. Start at 1, and if that's no better change to 13, then 2 then 12 and so on....
8. Click apply.

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Have tried all the channels without any real difference. Download speeds are now about 50KB/Sec whereas they used to be 8-10 times that. Haven't got a long enough Ethernet cable at the moment. Windows version is XP SP3, browers is IE8 and I use Zone Alam firewall.

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Should have added that the router details are now:
Link quality 98%
Signal Strength 68%
Noise Strength 26%
with no increase in download/upload speeds

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Hi drwood,
We could really do with seeing what speeds you are getting with the ethernet cable as it may not be anything to do with the wireless at all.

Re: Poor speed suddenly

Hi drwood,
Ethernet cables will work well up to about 100 metres.

Speed went back to 3MB after a week so all's well now. Thanks for your help.
