Re: Plusnet DNS Servers Slow?

Very interesting point you make with regards to the Card speeds, and in fact I'll let you guys decide which model is the fastest, the 512MB Version or the 256MB.
So to recap, I'm over-clocking x.x.x.15 @900Mhz 512MB Model B with a class (10) SD card running version: Linux 3.12.22+ #691 PREEMPT Wed Jun 18 18:29:58 BST 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux.
The other Raspberry on ip..... x.x.x.14  @700Mhz 256MB Model A with a class (6) SD card also now running: Linux 3.12.22+ #691 PREEMPT Wed Jun 18 18:29:58 BST 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux.
I'll admit the Raspberry  on x.x.x.15 is live and being used throughout all the above tests by at least 2 users, x.x.x.14 was just idling between tests, both caches were cleared before the tests.

Re: Plusnet DNS Servers Slow?

So, not much difference.
I was hoping you could justify me getting a 512MB Pi.

I'm getting a lot of failed lookups tonight, strangely when it's like this I never get failed lookup on the Pi.
gateway ptw-ag03, I'll try a different one shortly.

Re: Plusnet DNS Servers Slow?

That's both of us getting double posts.  Undecided
Edit:
tried to report both duplicate posts, IT wont let me report mine says it wouldn't make sense.  Cheesy

Re: Plusnet DNS Servers Slow?

Nope, not a lot in the way of an overwhelming difference at all. Using DNSBench tends to flood my Router if I try to test too many servers at once.

Changed gateway to ptn-ag03.
No more failed lookups.  Undecided

Possibly exhausts the session table?

According to DNS Benchmark, on this low latency link, the RPi is only a couple of ms behind PlusNet's servers when it comes to doing its own recursion, which is impressive.
In real world use, the few ms gained from the cache and the consistency of the performance more than make up for that (plus there's an additional perceived speed gain from ad filtering if implemented).
Obviously, on a higher latency link the gain from the cache is even greater, and it makes sense to use other servers with large caches as upstream resolvers.
I found things were slower when I forwarded queries upstream to PlusNet's servers (probably because of patchy slow responses or time-outs,) so I figured better to do it ourselves.

The figures I'm getting seem very consistent with 11110_110's using OpenDNS for recursion, in fact -- the difference being in the lower latency of our line.
The RPi processor load goes up to 6.3% for the Unbound process during the benchmarking. Definitely not stressing the Pi!

This is what I get as a benchmark for OpenDNS directly, for comparison:

From PM's you know I'm getting into this a little bit, so I was wondering if you could advise how to read your graph?
