Plus Net V BT speedtests

Can anyone tell me why there is such a discrepence betwwe Plus Net and BT when it comes to speed tests?
I have just done speed tests with both.BT says that my throughput speed is 3614kbps and PN says it it only 1900. Now, surely this cannot be exchange contention etc, not to lose 1500kbps.......
I have already tried disconnecting everything in the house, have changed the BT faceplate, connected the router wirelessly to the main socket etc.
If anyone has any more ideas i would be pleased to know what else can be done..........................

Hi there,
Which PN speedtest have you tried? If it's the one available through the portal then it's not great, try this one instead.

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

Are you using the checker on the Portal?  If so, it is not entirely accurate I'm afraid and is set to be replaced shortly.
Have you tried this one : http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk ?
What about external checkers such as that on http://www.thinkbroadband.com ?
Just want to make sure that the slow speeds you're seeing are not purely as a result of the speedtester...  Or, perhaps, confirm that they are!

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

Richard,
I lose about 5000-6000Kbps on Exchange contention Smiley  However, if you're getting those speeds on a BT speedtest, it could suggest that something is awry.
Could you possibly copy and paste the result of your BT Speedtest?

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

Liam, Latest BT speedtest below. throughput now gone down to 3190.Lower than the 3614 on the test before.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  4928 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3190 kbps
Tests on think broadband were 2.6.....and 2.7mb.
test on mybroadbandspeed were 2.1 and 1.9mbps.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\i would have thought that i should be getting around 3.5mbps not the 2.7 i am getting.
Hopefully you guys may come up with an idea but please look at the question raised in April of this year that is still open and running first............

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

Hi Richard,
Thanks for that.  It's quite a strange one!
Can I ask if you have tried tweaking your MTU/rWin?  We have a guide here, so please feel free to have a read and shout if you have any questions!

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

My first thought would be to try tweaking your MTU and Rwin settings. The guide I've linked to should be helpful

Didn't even notice James' post Cheesy
At least we are suggesting the same things, would get confusing otherwise.

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

The important bit is to run the DSLreports tweak test, which is linked to on the referenced page but for convenience it's here.
On the pre-results page set Service as DSL and type 8000 in the Download speed box.  Select your Operating System and click the "recommend" button.
The page displayed includes a URL.  Posting that here will help us provide comment.

http://www.dslreports.com/tweakr/block:5189f91?service=dsl&speed=8000&os=winXP&via=pppoA
Here's the results of the test (URL above)
I have no idea what it all means but i have now got DR tcp ready on my desktop.
Any help as to what to do with the results, and what settings i should now use will be gratefully received.
Thanks again guys

Re: Plus Net V BT speedtests

Hi,
The RWIN is quite low, try changing it to 58400 (receive window in DrTCP). Leave everything else as it is, save the changes then reboot the PC for the changes to take effect. See if that then gives you a better performance.
