Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Just wondering if there's something wrong with my internet connection or I need a better router than this Thompson one.. I seem to suffer slightly high pings even on UK servers and do get disconnects a lot 😕
I'm not too sure on how much interleaving affects this? is it alot and does turning it off cause more problems?
Also this is what my Thompson router is reporting
Uptime is low due to the connection just reset itself not long ago for some reason. Also line attenuation seems to be a bit high or is that normal?
Uptime: 0 days, 0:20:21
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Channel mode: Interleave
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 812 / 3,648
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,616
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0.00 / 367.01
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 56.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 17.0 / 9.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 3 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 196,664 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 51 / 455,988
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 39 / 2,572
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 31,527
Is there a problem with this connection? or do things seem normal and will interleaving being turned off help my pings/disconnects with out causing too much extra problems? Or will buying a new router ie linksys etc help more?
Thanks Smiley

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Hi there,
TBH the only way to see if a new router would help is to try one out. Let me know if getting your hands on a spare one is an issue though.
Can you post some examples of what pings to some of the gaming servers you usually use are like? also results of a traceroute would be good too.
With regards to the interleaving this differs from line to line, orders to apply or remove interleaving take one working day to complete so you could let us try removing this with a view to turning it back on if things get worse for you.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

I'll see if I can get some results for you over the weekend, I'm on a night shift tonight so won't have much of a chance too.
But I'll play some of the game I usually play over the weekend and see how they go

Those are just some Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers I quickly did some TraceRT's too.
But I have a game that's recently out Warhammer Space Marine and that uses a type of P2P hosting and 95% of games are unplayable for me Sad I get a lot of "waiting for host" messages.
Curious as to what interleaving would do to my connect if I got it turned off?

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

When my BT 2100 gave up the ghost I used a Thomson 585 v7, I mainly play BFBC2 and I also kept getting disconnected with the Thomson, also my ping ingame was 999 which made it unplayable. I turned uPNP off in the settings and this stopped me losing connection and my ping was OK but after about 5 minutes my ping would shoot up to 999 again. I tried 3 different Thomson routers and all did the same thing.  I ended up buying a Belkin N300 F7D model and with my Asus RoG mobo I have the lowest ping ingame. It sits around 70 but at the moment Interleaving has been turned back on for my connection so I am sitting around 110 ingame.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Fifa also uses P2P like Warhammer does my head in its unplayable
My ping is like 17-25 on other games but when i play FIFA its unplayable ive been having murder with PN over this as it very unfair to class it under P2P then Gaming.
Even thought of leaving on many occasions due to this but i actually like PN and their support team so i stay.
Come on PN get peer to peer games under gaming not p2p  Cry
The pings for other games other than P2P are brilliant , superb better than other isps my mates are on in the same street its just P2P that lets them down

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

@KingPenguinUK
That looks like an issue with your router if a local device is giving 99ms RTT.
By comparison I get:
1    <1 ms    1 ms    <1 ms  int-gateway.abc.co.uk [10.0.1.1] <---LAN Device
2    1 ms    1 ms    1 ms  ext-gateway.abc.co.uk [10.0.21.1] <--- LAN Device
3    24 ms    23 ms    26 ms  lo0-plusnet.pcl-ag06.plus.net [195.166.130.41]
4    23 ms    23 ms    23 ms  gi7-6-753.pcl-gw01.plus.net [84.93.254.89]
5    24 ms    24 ms    24 ms  po4.pcl-gw02.plus.net [212.159.1.129]
6    23 ms    24 ms    23 ms  po5.thn-gw02.plus.net [212.159.1.133]
7    24 ms    23 ms    24 ms  linx.killercreation.co.uk [195.66.225.123]
8    24 ms    24 ms    24 ms  rt-2-cent.killercreation.co.uk [217.146.94.2]
9    24 ms    24 ms    23 ms  server.killercreation.co.uk [81.19.208.31]

If your connected via wireless I'd expect a ping still sub 10ms depending how busy it is.  If you havent already get the router rebooted, failing that try another one or speak to Adam_Walker.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Like James says ya have to turn upnp off with the thompson and it helps a lot especially on BC2 , i used to have a Home Hub 2 which worked fine untill lately , now i am back on the thopmson i get high ping spikes again  >:(.
so looks like the thompson is not a good router for gaming , its ok for everday surfing but that about it.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

@paulmh5 he's using pci or usb modem hence the 99 ping, not a router.
@OP with your 30ish out of game ping if you have interleaving turned on it will increase it by 40-50% then you add on the overhead for actually being in a game so another 10ms or so on top.  I would suggest you leave it off unless your modem looses connection a lot, if its stable then its not broken so doesn't need it.
But if the modem is old I would suggestion looking at borrowing a router to test with, usb/pci modems hog your PCs cpu to a point and if you are gaming its the last thing you need when in a graphically intensive game like a FPS.

Hey rongtw, I will keep an eye out for you mate. I mainly play on Africa Harbour conquest 1000 ticket servers now though as it is complete carnage, lots of kills and points because I want to try and get to 50 rank before BF3 comes out.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Tracert RTTs of 99ms on the hop to the TG585 don't mean it is faulty, it's normal to see these when it is busy routing. Direct pings should be under 1ms.

Re: Pings and Gaming and Dissconnects

Well my PC is connected to my router via Net cable so it shouldn't be giving out 99ms pings, must admit the menus always seem sluggish on my Thompson anyway. Problem is the only other router I have is a non-wireless one from when I first joined Plusnet back in one of my old places in 2009.
I'm tempted next month to go out and buy a new router that works with ADSL and use that, since I'd like a proper N router anyway.
Take it plusnet has no problems with this and it should be easy to set up the new router to dial plusnet ok?

Curious about the line attenuation on the Downstream is 56db, is that normal or a little high?

It equates to a line length of 4.1km between yourself and the exchange (not as the crow flies).
