Packet loss and probable fault

My FTTC has been suffering from packet loss and steadily reducing speeds over the past couple of months.
My problems started around mid September when my line suddenly changed from a solid connection speed of about 59 mbits with no interleaving to about 53 mbits with interleaving enabled.  It was at this point I noticed that I had packet loss.  Depending on the time of the day a simple “ping bbc.co.uk –n 100” reports up to 5% loss. I have also seen the modem go through periods of dropping and resyncing the connection repeatedly over the space of a few minutes.  Given the resyncs happen quickly my PPP session doesn't drop.
Recently things have got worse and I am now down to a speed of about 44 mbit.  I would have done something earlier but I have been busy with a new job.  Any chance someone from Plus could take a look at my line?  I can raise a fault if that is the best way to proceed.
Thanks.

Re: Packet loss and probable fault

It's not too unusual for FTTC speeds to drop a bit (and interleaving to be applied) after install as cabinets become more populated (usually caused by crosstalk from other FTTC lines) but a drop from 59 to 44 is quite significant and it may well be worth raising a speed fault ticket (or telephone customer care).  Fast resyncs (without PPP drop) are not uncommon on FTTC, disconnecting and reconnecting via the router web interface will update the IP profile.  Packet loss may be due to interference on the line and the reduction of sync and application of interleaving is very likely the DLM trying to stabilise things in this case but raising a fault might get this checked (though interference can be very difficult to diagnose).

Re: Packet loss and probable fault

Hi there,
It's looking alright connection wise to be honest, not sure if there's enough there to raise a fault -

Though if the connection isn't performing as it should be it's definitely worth raising one still (via the wizard at http://faults.plus.net) as it's not necessarily down to the line dropping.

Re: Packet loss and probable fault

Thanks for the reply Matt / w23.  You won’t see the drops on your logs as the FTTC modem resyncs quick enough so that the PPP connection doesn’t drop.  I have seen instances of the modem doing multiple resyncs in the space of 15 mins or so.

I was on the original FTTC trial and my line was very stable until mid September.  My speeds have now reduced by 15 mbit and in addition the packet loss makes certain services, such as gaming unusable.
I have raised a fault, #61885875.

Re: Packet loss and probable fault

Our faults team are currently testing your line, once this is completed we'll be in-touch to let you know our findings.

Thanks Chris.
I will wait to hear from one of your fault colleagues.
