Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Evening all
I came home to see we had had a power cut about midday with the power back on approx 2pm
Checked RouterStats and found a Margin figure I had not seen since the days of ADSL (note - not even Max)
I was sync'ed at 3643kbps but with a Margin of 2.4db the attenuation was 'unchanged' at 55.5db, this was at an uptime of over 4hours 45mins (FWIW prior to the power outage I was sync'ed at 3183 with margin of 6db) Note - the Router still tells me ADSL2, FAST PATH so looks AOK!
According to the 88.2% rule I should see a measured speed of >3200
Now the Margin seems like it is holding at 2.4 i.e. the 3db "bracket" as I understand it but we shall see hwo that goes???
BT Speed Test says IP Profile is 3.21Mbps but the PlusNet IP says 2.8Mbps..............surely a mismatch???  Measured speed by BT is 2.53 and using the TBB tester is 2.5Mbps.
So IMO the good news is that if such a low margin is sustainable then the speed increase is very welcome Smiley  But PlusNet need to get the IP matching to the BT figure to really see measured speed lifted a tad

Hi Routefinder,
Just changed your profile to 3200 for you, hope that does pick the speed up - and glad to see it's uplifted, too Smiley

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Well TBB now says

So a much welcomed uplift Smiley
RouterStats says this
Noise Margin:    2.3  dB
Connection Rate:  3643  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 55.5  dB
Power:            0.0  dBm
Max Rate:        4492  Kbps

SuperFrames:      6791333
SF (CRC) Errors:  84734
Reed Solomon:    0
RS Corrected:    0
RS Un-Corrected:  0
HEC:              15544
Errored Seconds:  33328
Severe ES:        78
Interleave Depth: 1
Bitswaps:        6732
For an uptime of
Total Uptimes (From SF counts):
WAN:  1 days, 08:04:49
LAN:  1 days, 08:04:49

CRC:  84737
LOS:  0
LOF:  0
ES :  33331
Encouraging so far???  Wink  Though a measured speed closer to the IP would be nice  Grin

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

An update!
At approx 11:27am this morning the DLM did another little trick  Wink
I am now sync'ed at :-
Noise Margin:     3.4   dB
Connection Rate:  3755  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 55.5  dB
Power:            0.0   dBm
Max Rate:         4796  Kbps

SuperFrames:      469190
SF (CRC) Errors:  64
Reed Solomon:     15248702
RS Corrected:     414566
RS Un-Corrected:  567
HEC:              65
Errored Seconds:  48159
Severe ES:        80
Interleave Depth: 16
Bitswaps:         51
Now it is only DL that is showing as Interleaved and for the record the Telnet report for the Router still says FAST channel, so that was two days since the power outage triggered the Router to reboot.
Now I do not do online gaming so any ping times Interleaved are not a major issue though I do use iPlayer sometimes.
But to see such a jump in sync if that holds it will be close to the level I started with following the 10 days Training Period after getting onto the 21CN ADSL2 system.  So just hope it settles down and holds nicely as it goes well with the nice feeling that the sunney weather brings  Cheesy
PS TBB test says though Sad

BT Speedtest now says IP 3.31 which tallies with 88.2% of 3755 and DL speed of 2.89 which matches TBB reading but PlusNet currently still on 3.2Mbps, too early for PlusNet system to kick in that extra 100kbps increase  Grin

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Hi Jojo
Many thanks, will check measured speed later.............................but more importantly hope that what I am seeing is long lived and usable over the long term.................would hate for the first rain shower to find whatever the weak link is in the line from the exchange to "here" and cause grief because of damp ingress!  Roll_eyes
On a sub note ~ I was looking at changing my account from its old legacy Premier Option 1 to PlusNet Extra Pro but my question is:- is this just an allocation question is does the session drop i.e. based on what my line is doing now had I best wait Huh
PS Pulled it up a tad:-

Though as mentioned with an IP of 3.2 or now 3.3 I would hope the mesured speed would be that bit closer to the IP................................or have my grey cells, yet again, misunderstood as surely if the IP is 88.2% of sync the actual speed should not be yet even  more of significant % reduction from the IP figure!!!!

Maybe worth trying some other speed testers Smiley

...other speed testers Smiley

Well:-
Broadbandspeedchecker = 3.04Mbps
BBMax = 3109kbps
Ookla = 3.11Mbps
Speedtest.net = 3.11Mbps (an Ookla site?)
ZDNet = 3025kbps
DSL Reports = 2321Kb/s (this using the LA server)
So Ookla based site(s) give the highest measured speed.....................................but which one tells the most accurate picture???

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

The IP Profile allows only for protocol overheads, it makes no allowance for actually managing the website connection - that is synchronising and acknowledging to start and end transmission, acknowledging receipt of packets and possibly requesting and receiving retransmissions of the occasional damaged or lost packet. A data rate of 80-83% of sync/connection speed is good.
With Thinkbroadband speed tests one should also be aware that the measurements are in kibibits per second and mebibits per second so need to be multiplied by 1.024 and (1.024)2 respectively to convert them to the kilobits per second and megabits per second used for sync speeds and by the other testers.

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Perhaps I should start another thread but I have been away this week on business and SWMBO told me that the BB was down for while day before last (I think?), I told her to wait and see as it should come back up of its own accord.
Well it did but what a disaster Sad
Noise Margin:     9.1   dB
Connection Rate:  2723  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 54.5  dB
Power:            0.0   dBm
Max Rate:         3964  Kbps

SuperFrames:      7511025
SF (CRC) Errors:  87
Reed Solomon:     244108344
RS Corrected:     287319
RS Un-Corrected:  643
HEC:              62
Errored Seconds:  232473
Severe ES:        184068
Interleave Depth: 16
Bitswaps:         1366

This was as noted here:-
Total Uptimes (From SF counts):
WAN:   1 days, 11:34:08
LAN:   8 days, 18:25:33

So what sort of line trouble made this happen as I do not recall the last time I had a Margin of 9db, as noted before my Margin even under MaxADSL was 6db for years.
I will drop the session and restart it in optimum time i.e. after 8am to 12 midday and see what happens but since going 21CN things started out oh so nicely with good stability but now it is not looking so hunky dorey!
In the past when any such strange happenings occured I have been told along the lines of "well that is the way the system works......" frankly I say what I have said in the past that BT are trying to get something out of the wires that they were never intended for and in the main it works but that presupposes that the lines are good and 100% copper with top notch joints and joins but where the "connections" are sub optimal BT fall back to their excuse that the voice function is fine and you get what you get for data.
Instead of investing some of the profits in at least replacing the aluminium with copper where they have no plans to roll out FTTC ~ I wish we could move to a better location but sadly that is not an option at the moment!
So, Jojo, Matt, Andy et al please give me your further insight and aid to restoring what was a nice 21CN service but subject to the new session tomorrow that holds at decent margin I enjoyed(?) of old Smiley
PS Just for the record Sad

PPS Discussing this with SWMBO she said there was not Internet connection at all on Monady 28th or Tuesday 29th and she did not have reason to try again on Wednesday but Thursday was fine when she used her computer to email etc.
So can CSC please see what the Radius logs have to say about thsi period and feedback?

No need, we can keep track on this thread if its the same issue, I see you did raise a new one anyway Wink

So what sort of line trouble made this happen

We'd not be able to tell the exact reason without a fault being raised first. Before getting stuck in I just want to check if you're still in the situation today first? Also if you do need us to investigate please can you raise a fault for us please?

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Hi Adam
As far as I can tell the dropped and manually restarted session at approx 3am was the last one.
As mentioned above I will discon, and this time reboot the router to see if that improves the sync speed/Margin???
As for raising a fault before you can look at the Radius server logs, why is that step required???

Re: Now there's a thing and an IP mismatch!

Right I did the discon of the session and rebooted the router to good effect ~ so much for the DLM "knowing best"
Noise Margin:     6.1   dB
Connection Rate:  3159  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 56.0  dB
Power:            0.0   dBm
Max Rate:         3980  Kbps

SuperFrames:      446477
SF (CRC) Errors:  5
Reed Solomon:     14733764
RS Corrected:     2406
RS Un-Corrected:  28
HEC:              5
Errored Seconds:  2
Severe ES:        0
Interleave Depth: 16
Bitswaps:         164

For this long:-
Total Uptimes (From SF counts):
WAN:   0 days, 02:07:37
LAN:   0 days, 02:07:37

CRC:  5
LOS:  0
LOF:  0
ES :  2
So it did look like something was stuck!  Though for the record I did have the above new speed on Fast and the download is still showing as Interleaved
However that still does not asnwer the question about ther Radius Logs ~ do I really have to report a fault to get the feedback on the logs???
Though a couple hours in the DLM has 'worked' to lift the measured speed

Having said will it get to the lofty heights of 2.7 as the % and IP profile infers it could get to....................................though nowhere near the regular 3.0 I was getting Smiley

why is that step required???

The connection is looking quite stable at the moment, so I'd not be too concerned but if that gets worse a fault would need to be raised in order to get the issue fixed, as simple as that Smiley

Hi Adam
Thanks for that but can you pleas epost the Radius logs form Monday through to Thursday which is when SWMBO reported the BB was down for at leats Mon & Tues???
