Unfortunately, not quite the speeds I was expecting, so let's see how things improve over the next week or two....
Just done a test on speedtester.bt.com and here are the results:
=======================================
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 15320 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1112 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 13000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 146 kbps
This test was not conclusive and further testing is required.
Please wait whilst you are redirected to undertake a second test.
=======================================
At this point I was unable to perform the second test due to BTs site crashing.
And here are my ADSL connection stats. I'm a stonesthrow from the exchange so I should get a decent speed.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 1085 kbps
Line Attenuation 5.0 db 2.0 db
Noise Margin 17.1 db 5.9 db
Any +net techs like to offer an opinion?
Cheers
Matt

The ridiculously low throughput figures given by the BT speedtester seem to be a feature of ADSL2+, or more likely the 21CN interconnect. The mybroadbandspeed figures suggest that your PlusNet profile is still at 8000 and contention is bringing it down still further. That's the same problem I have, hopefully the PlusNet profiles will sync up soon.

What sync speed do you get from the BT Test Socket?

Quote from: DcUK What router are you using?
I'm using the Netgear DG834PN. Guess we'll see over the next few days then
The line is brand new in a new development, installed by BT. No extensions and the results are the same when plugged into the test socket.
Thanks
Matt

Are you sure it's connected in full ADSL2+ mode, not just ADSL2?
Do you have the latest firmware?
(actually I think ADSL2 is just 12meg not 16)
Can you borrow another ADSL2+ router and try that?

I've never really had a problem with the Netgear modems, this one I got free from work (they pay for all our IT needs). I don't have another ADSL2+ router to hand but could go out and buy one. What brand would you suggest? (don't worry, I won't hold you liable )
Thanks
Matt

Seems I'm maxing out at just under 6mb, which is MUCH better than I was getting on ADSL but still not quite the advertised speeds.
Box is still synching at 15MB.... the waiting game continues...

Estimated line speed:
6 Mbps - Checked on 2009-02-20 15:47:07
Current line speed:
6500
Is there something Plusnet can do, or should I just wait?

I really am thankful for 6mb after what I've had to put up with for the last 4 months! Up to 8MB and only getting 300 - 500 k is not fun!
I had the email this morning tell me I'm now on ADSL2+ having used it since Friday night.

You have drawn a totally invalid conclusion here. When comparing the effects of different firmware, using the test socket you must not look at the results of speed tests as they will be affected minute by minute by many factors external to your setup. If you are not convinced try running the same speed test three times in succession and see how widely the results vary!
That you were only getting 300-500k when you are so close to the exchange indicates that something is wrong. Is all other equipment plugged in to any extension on your phone line filtered?
What you need to monitor are the stats (sync speed, attenuation and noise margin) reported by your router. After those have been optimised we can move on to look at the IP Profile reported by the BT test and the PN Current line speed.
