Re: Noise Margin Change Request

No problem Mark, I'm not sure we can increase the upload speed further to be honest however I've nudged the SNR target down to 3dB. With regards to your latency I'd imagine a lower SNR and interleaving would increase it slightly.

Let us know how it goes, we can always increase the SNR back to 6dB (although we'll have to wait until tomorrow as we can only do SNR changes once every 24 hours)

[edit]

@Townman The line is ADSL2+ now.  This wasn't a 20CN circuit before, it looks like it was provisioned on ADSL over ADSL2+.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

@Gandalf

Thanks for your quick service!

Here is another trace route to compare with earlier;

tracert pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com

Tracing route to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 21 ms 21 ms 22 ms 128.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk [195.166.143.128]
5 22 ms 22 ms 21 ms 195.99.125.136
6 22 ms 28 ms 25 ms peer8-et-0-0-4.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net [109.159.252.158]
7 * * * Request timed out.
8 22 ms 22 ms 21 ms po4-31.core-rs2.thdo.ncuk.net [80.249.97.85]
9 22 ms 22 ms 21 ms pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]

Also, why does the upload margin still show as 6 on the router?  Can't both be changed, or only the one?

Do I need to restart the router this time?

Thanks again,

Mark.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

@Townman

The only question I can answer out of what you mentioned is I have no internal wiring.

The BT line comes straight through the outside wall, with a Master Socket 5C directly on the other side.

I've only used the supplied cable to connect the socket to the router, using the filter.

The only other cable is the one for the cordless phone.  As the phone works, and I can see no visible damage to this cable I assume it's fine.

Regards,

Mark.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

Hello @mcv,

The upload SNR margin cannot be decreased to 3dB on both the SNR tools that we have. DLM can reduce the SNR if there is a high meantime between errors but the target cannot be reduced manually below 6dB for upload.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

The only upstream target SNRMs are 6 and 9, I don't think the DLM has any options available to it that cannot be manually chosen.

I'm guessing that the upstream isn't very good because you're on the oldest and worst type of exchange equipment. You might get a little more upstream speed if you could set your modem to ADSL2 rather than ADSL2+, but I'm not sure if that's possible with the Plusnet 2704n.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

Hi @Gandalf

The connection seems fine so far;

5 - Mode ADSL
6 - Uptime: 1 days 21:14:33
7 - Data rate: 808/5423
8 - Maximum data rate: 1040/5636
9 - Noise margin: 6.4/3.8
10 - Line attenuation: 25.4/47.0
12 - Data sent/received: 733.8M/1.4G

The trace route is still in the low 20's even over wifi.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Mark.

Re: Noise Margin Change Request

Keep a watch on the max data rate.  Those stats suggest that there are fewer tone bins available at 3dB than there were at 6dB.

Hopefully the line will remain stable, you will maintain a better sync speed whist not encountering a (higher) level of errors which degrades the effective data transfer rate.
