New line slower than old line

I had a problem last November which resulted in a call by a BT engineer.
He replaced my 35 year old line with a new line drilled straight the wall into a master socket.
This line went to another pole 100 yards nearer the cabinet, and he picked up a new pair to the cabinet.
Before the problem I was getting 12.5 Meg down and 1.1 Meg up.
Now I get 8.5 Meg down and 0.5 Meg up
Why ?

That indicates that your default SNR margin has been increased to ~12dB, possibly due to the fault in November.
If you line is currently stable, you can request a retrain of your line, which will reduce the SNR margin back down to 6dB, giving you an increase in sync speed.
Maximum theoretical speed for your line with the reported attenuation of 31dB is 14528 Kbps.
The Digital Care chaps should pick this up and should be able to confirm whether your line is stable, and a good candidate for retraining.

Re: New line slower than old line

Your default noise margin looks to be about 15dB (it could be 12dB but as the noise margin drops at this time of day I suspect 15dB)
Either way you need a retrain providing the reason for the high noise margin has been fixed.
How long has the router been in sync
Once this has been sorted you could ask for the upstream to be uncapped which will five a useful speed increase
EDIT - I wish Barry didn't type so fast

Re: New line slower than old line

The router has been insync since mid November when the line was replaced.
How do I get a retrain and upload uncapped ?

Re: New line slower than old line

Hi there,
You've been connected now well over 48 hours so I've requested the reset for you. Interleaving will stay on but I set the target SNR for downstream to 6dB which should improve the speeds for you. Your profile on our side has also been adjusted so it doesn't slow things down when they do improve, that should happen within the next couple of hours or so.
Sorry for the delay in picking this up.

Re: New line slower than old line

Not much change
8.37 down
0.37 up
What is going on ?

Looks like there may have been a few connection drops over the past few days which won't be helping, let us know if that might have been yourself powercycling or rebooting the router perhaps.
To be honest though and bearing in mind what you mentioned about the previous line the speeds you are reporting now are very close to the speed estimate given for that line and no 2 lines are guaranteed to be the same I'm afraid.

Re: New line slower than old line

I rebooted the modem this am otherwise not touched it.
Upload is very low speed as I need to maintain a web site.
0.33 down from 0.96 is quite a drop (60%).
Down load down by 25%.
Not very happy with this .

Re: New line slower than old line

Hi there,
Your upload was set to 448k, so I've uncapped this an it will complete tomorrow for you which will see your upload speeds. Let me know how you get on when this is complete with your download and upload speeds.

Many thanks.
