New customer, 'looking up...' issue

Having just switched to Plusnet from Nildram, I've been relatively pleased by the general service offered.
However, using Firefox (on Mac OS X 10.5) whenever I go to a website, it reports 'looking up <website>' in the bottom corner for a good 10-15 seconds before loading the website, browsing the actual website is fine, but it's the initial connecting phase that is slow and something I'm definitely not used to.
Is this a problem or something to be expected? I personally don't feel like I could put up with it in the long term, and if it's a common 'feature' of Plusnet i'll be leaving before my first month is up!
Thanks,

Re: New customer, 'looking up...' issue

Sounds initially like a DNS problem.

Re: New customer, 'looking up...' issue

Try changing your DNS settings to use OpenDNS and seeing if that helps.

Did you have the Nildram DNS lookups hard coded into your router

Flushed my DNS, and tried OpenDNS - still having the same issue.
I'm using the Plusnet router btw.

Re: New customer, 'looking up...' issue

How did you set the openDNS in the router
I ask because it can only be done  by a telnet command on the 585v6 and I can't see the 585v7 being different
This is how it was done on the 585v6
Quote
Telnet in...
dns server route add dns=4.2.2.1 metric=1 intf=Internet
dns server route add dns=4.2.2.2 metric=1 intf=Internet
where 4.2.2.1/4.2.2.2 = new DNS server to be added
The effect of the metric=1 is to give them a higher priority than the automatic ones

I used telnet commands to do it.
I think i've found the solution though. It's the wireless in the 585v7 router. I've just connected my Macbook via ethernet as a last resort and it runs absolutely perfectly now.
Thanks anyway lads, hope this can help people out.
On a side note, anyone have any idea why the wireless is causing this issue?

Re: New customer, 'looking up...' issue

try using a wireless scanner app to see what channels your negbours are using and switch your wireless to a channel not/under used.

Just tried that, no luck. Do you reckon it's just the Thomson having poor compatibility with the Airport of my Macbook?

Hi Steedmalbranque,
Have you tried changing the wireless channel on your router at all to see if this helps at all?

Re: New customer, 'looking up...' issue

Thanks James, I just joined today and have had a night of frustration until I tried switching from channel 1 to 11 , now it  works a treat and no longer slower than dial up.
In case any one else is having a problem with their MacBook going like a snail using a wireless connection  this is how I did it I logged on to my router (the Thomson one) then went here ...
home> home network> interfaces > WLAN:PlusnetWireless then clicked  configure at the top right, changed channel selection to manual , changed number to 11 and now I'm away with it.
Hope this helps someone.

The WiFi and TCP/IP protocols are not related to specific vendors - they are standardised to a certain level across all implementations.
