Quote from: Biomech Update:
I do apologise for wasting your time - I mean, this is still an issue, but I have this awful problem that my brain goes too fast to keep up with so I try a million things without thinking about it and also skip things that I might be at fault because they shouldn't be at fault.
LOL - don't worry about it.
I had a whole series of strange issues when FTTC was first installed, that made things appear slower than they were. I hit a whole sequence of wired & wireless issues, plus browser differences, plugin problems, OS differences and software issues. You never know where the problems lie until you push the envelope a little further...
Quote Laptop: Hardwired into router:
36/9
Good. That shows the basic FTTC connection is working fine.
Quote New PC wireless (~12ft from router):
36/8
OK. Pretty good for wireless, so suggests the new PC has an "N" wireless interface. Also suggests you were at the correct orientation from the router.
Quote This PC wireless (~16ft from router):
19/9
So the problem must be this card right - or...
It partly depends on the capability of the card. Is it G or N? If G, then you can't expect much faster - maybe another 5Mbps down.
Note too that when both G and N devices are both accessing the router, you might be causing both to work at G speeds. Some routers can keep the N devices working at full speed, but I somehow doubt that the Technicolor is one of them!
Quote Nothing like struggling porn
I'd better not ask what those photos are for
Using FTTC since 2011. Currently on 80/20 Unlimited Fibre Extra.

I'm still having problems, but I've done a few more local network tests (mostly various methods/routes of file transfer) and everything pretty much indicates this temporary wifi card is the problem. It's been a bit busy this week, but today I'm trying to shift the remaining data off of here and onto the NAS so I can remove this PC and start using the new one properly.... I'll let you know how it goes.

Exactly the same problems, possibly worse down to 15/3 now.
So there must be something interfereing with the signal right? I've systematically turned off everything nearby, the printer (wifi), the speaker sub, the DECT phone. No improvements, so it must be on the other side of the wall right? With the neighbours.
Any suggestions as to how I can hardware this machine in this room to the router 2 rooms away? It's a rented property so I can't rip up the floor boards. Are those mains electric / network adapters any good?

So now I haven't moved anything and I'm getting 30/7 from this machine, which is acceptable,
However, gaming is unplayable, people are literally jerking all over the place and my ping constantly swings from 40ms - 200ms (as it did after FTTC was installed and I was using my old machine).
Is there something that can be enabled/disabled by plusnet that would fix or stabalise this?

Just out of interest, have you tried changing the Wireless Channel within your router?

I scanned the area, the only other network is on Channel 1, mine was set to CH6. At this setting, the router shows "actual speed" as 65Mbps - now if I understand this correctly from other threads, that only allows for 32.5Mbps up right?
I tried changing to channel 12 and the routers reported "actual speed" dropped right down to 19.5Mbps.

There is a telephone extension socket under my desk - 12" from my PC - is there any way that the FTTC faceplate can be moved here? What would it take? Is it possible and how much will it cost me?

If you still want to fix your WiFi, then you need to understand that the problem you have is the relative difference between the good signal level and the bad noise level. You want to maximise the former, and minimise the latter. To do this, without knowing whether you are suffering from excess noise or insufficient signal, is tricky. All you can do is:
- Alter the orientation of the aerial in the router (swing it around so that different sides are pointing to the PC at different time)
- Alter the orientation of the receiving PC (get the aerial to point at the router, or aways from, or at 90 degrees to, or up, down or sideways)
- Alter the relative locations (the distance apart; the vertical separation; the number of walls and/or floors between the router & PC)
- Alter the channel being used
To help view the signal strength as you are doing these, try the InSSIDer program to monitor the strength being received.
It is worth doing this before you try moving the router. At least you'll know what the best effect you can get by moving it near, and decide if that is good enough.
Using FTTC since 2011. Currently on 80/20 Unlimited Fibre Extra.

I've bought these which are £26.90 for the pair delivered free and have since added a third for an internet enabled TV. You could pay a bit more for the AV500 which I've also seen good reports about.
I had mine on different ring mains and in trailing extension leads both of which are not recommended and they were fine.

However, the router sets up as normal and is fantastic, but it keeps failing on the Internet connection. All of the lights indicate that it has detected the connection - is there something blindingly obvious that I'm missing?

I assume you selected PPPOE as the connection type?
It might be worth putting the TG582n back in place and checking the TP-link website for firmware updates, might be one of the fixes applied will resolve your issue.

I did indeed. Out of interest, where are the TG582n's confirgured? Is it done over the network when it's installed? I can't imagine they do them before they are shipped out.
Anyway.
Happy days. New router is and working (for some reason it was set to "connect on demand" and wouldn't connect on demand, I had to login to the router and manually force it to connect - then it worked!)
I'm now getting 36.5/9 as of my last test. I drop 200kbps between the router and this PC on wireless (5Ghz).
So thank you all for your help and knowledge, you can now add me to the camp of people who had problems that were solved by buying a new router

They're not actually preconfigured per se. Each router is set up to automatically connect to a remove server (called TR069) which checks the serial number of the router against our database of customer details, if a match is found to our records it sends back the login details.
