Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

I have joined Plusnet from Sky and I am very happy with their service. However, I don't think the Thomson Router is very good (antenna cannot be replaced). I have flashed and loaded the latest Netgear firmware onto my ex Sky router Netgear DG834GT. I have configured it according to Plusnet's instructions. However, I cannot load webpages (Internet light is showing). The router shows that it is connected. I have inputed manually Plusnet's DNS numbers but the router will still not display web pages. Any ideas? Thank you.

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

The only thing I can think of is that your computer is trying to use the old Sky DNS rather than the router allocated ones
Have you tried using an IP address - put this one in the browser 212.58.224.138 and see what happens
This is what I get

Sorry, the address you are looking for is not available.
You will find almost all BBC public service content on http://www.bbc.co.uk/ and by following links to the content you require.
To access specific areas directly you can type the address in the format: http://www.bbc.co.uk/'service or programme title'
e.g. The Radio 1, BBC One and BBC Weather websites can be found at the following addresses:
    * http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/
    * http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/
    * http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/
Alternatively you can search bbc.co.uk:

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

thanks. I have tried Google : 64.233.187.99 but it still will not display the web pages. The DNS numbers I have entered into the router are 212.159.6.10 and 212.159.6.9.

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

Log on to your Netgear router and click on the status page.  Towards the top of the page it should show something like this:
IP Address xxx.yyy.180.59
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 195.166.128.242
Domain Name Server 212.159.6.9
212.159.6.10
Do you see something similar?  You should not normally need to manually tell the router what DNS addresses to use, unless you don't want to use Plusnet's DNS servers.
(I have hidden the first part of my current IP address).

Off topic Cheesy - but it is very likely that xxx will be 87 and yyy will be in the range 112-115 Grin

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

Thanks. This is what I get:
IP Address  xx.yyy.108.188
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask  255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 195.166.128.236
Domain Name Server  212.159.6.10
212.159.6.9
The only difference (besides the IP adress) is the Gateway IP Adress. Is that the problem and if yes, how would I change this.

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

Very good, Jeremy, of course I stupidly blanked the wrong end of my IP address.
Hoppere, that all seems in order.  Your router has a perfectly good connection to the internet via Plusnet so something on your computer must be overriding the settings.  What do you get if you open a CMD window and type ipconfig /all <enter>.  You should see something like this (I have removed a lot of the extraneous stuff):
  IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.20(Preferred)
  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
  Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 23 August 2010 18:02:27
  Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 26 August 2010 18:02:26
  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
  DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

  DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

This is what I am getting...obvioulsy I am using the Thomson router to respond to these helpful suggestions. One thought I had: I configured the Netgear router on a laptop as the recovery software for the router did not work on my desktop - is this maybe the problem?
here is what I got:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.68
  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
  Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 23 August 2010 17:42:43
  Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 24 August 2010 17:42:43
  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
  DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

  DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

Have you checked the configuration of any Firewall you may have installed ?
Its highly likely that the Netgear is using a different local subnet ( 192.168.0.x ) to the Thomson  ( 192.186.1.x ), maybe your firewall is blocking the changed subnet ?

Re: Netgear DG834GT shows connected but does not load webpages

after you flashed the firmware, did you do factory reset ?  Might be worthwhile doing that and then enter the PlusNet settings

Smiley This did the trick!!! Thanks a lot for all your input! My previous Sky Netgear router is now working fine with Plusnet. Great Forum! Cool
