My estimated speed

Hi. I'm a new customer to plusnet after spending quite a few years with the dire talktalk and although I am happy with the service that plusnet has supplied so far I do have one gripe, my broadband speed. Prior to signing up I was given and estimate of 12mbps download speed but I can only get 4mbps (just). Now I realize that estimated download speeds should be taken with a pinch of salt but that is quite a gap. I also realize that it all depends on how far away you live from the exchange but I know somebody who lives further away from the same exchange then I do and they can get speeds of 14 mbps (non fibre).
I would appreciate it if somebody could look into this matter as the estimated speed is one of the main reasons I switched from talktalk.
Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum adisenoj1974 Smiley
Could you do a BT speed test at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com, click on 'Further Diagnostics', run that part and post the results.
Also what does this say https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
Are you connected wired or wireless to your router?

Re: My estimated speed

Hi there,
I've just been running some line diagnostics and I'm unable to see any obvious problems from the results.
I'm wondering if you're phone socket is the type that has a test socket that you could connect the router to? http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/master-socket-guide.shtml
If so I'd like to run another test with the router in there to see if there's a difference in the results.

Re: My estimated speed

The other piece of information needed is the router stats - noise margin, speeds and attenuation - preferably in your normal socket and the test socket if you have one

Re: My estimated speed

As far as I know we don't have a test socket.

No problem, in that case it would be helpful for us to run a test with everything but the router connected to the line (i.e any phones etc unplugged).

Re: My estimated speed

Sorry about the lack of replies but I've been a bit busy, anyway, I have now plugged the router directly into the main phone socket and the speed is still hovering around 4mbps.

Re: My estimated speed

Hi there,
I've checked your connection and can see there has been an increase so I've changed your speeds profile to 7Mb/s.
I've also noticed that you have frequent disconnections shortly after midnight regularly;

Is there anything that happens at this time?
It will also be worth us placing a SNR reset on your line which should increase your speeds further, we just need to make sure there your line is stable over the next 24 hours first.

Re: My estimated speed

Thanks for the reply. I don't know why I should be losing the connection around midnight as the router is on all the time.

Re: My estimated speed

D'you have a burglar alarm or sky box plugged into the line at all? Just wondering if that's doing something. If not then it's likely to be something in the nearby area, the half hourly intervals suggest at something electrical.

Re: My estimated speed

It might be worth trying to disconnect your sky box from your phone line and see if this stops the disconnections.

Is that plugged in to an ADSL filter?
