Re: My Websites Being Blocked By Plusnet

Fixed.
A configuration option caused hostgators dns server addresses to be falsely marked as private, and so caused it to fail validation.
Amended the configuration, and now queries on the affected servers work:
# dig www.overseas-holiday-rentals.com
; <<>> DiG 9.7.3 <<>> www.overseas-holiday-rentals.com
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:

Re: My Websites Being Blocked By Plusnet

Something to do with the IP address beginning 192?

Re: My Websites Being Blocked By Plusnet

Yep.
I can confirm that my domains are now resolving again on the plusnet dns servers.
probably opening a can of worms here but what are the arguments for either sticking with google/another dns or switching back to plusnet's?

Re: My Websites Being Blocked By Plusnet

Potentially faster browsing - if the DNS lookups occur quicker using Google's servers. There's a free tool to see which is the fastest global DNS server for you - https://code.google.com/p/namebench/ I don't believe it will check PN's servers however.
There are also advantages with DNS providers like OpenDNS (free), where you can set up content filtering.

Why not use one of each? That's what I do. Plusnet as primary and Google as a backup.

Re: My Websites Being Blocked By Plusnet

Due to the way the Plusnet servers are set up there's very little benefit if having two Plusnet servers so Bob's suggestion makes a lot of sense.
