Re: Moving master socket cost? Rewiring other stuff

Hi again,
Being honest one school of thought could be that the only way to find out is to go ahead and get the job done. However I'm more inclined to think that the improvement may be minimal when weighed up against the financial cost.

If we go through the faults process, for instance if you experience an intermittent connection or significant deterioration of your speeds then we can send an engineer out who is authorised to enact whatever repair work is necessary and is likely to replace that sort of wiring if you ask nicely (and provide tea and biscuits).

Hmnn interesting, we had a  bt engineer round when I was with TT ( Cry ) he took one look at the wiring, shook his head and quickly sodded off back to the cabinet and exchange  :D.
Funny you should mention disconnections I do seem to be getting a few over the last few days which in truth I haven't  had before.
So  have a quick look at your end and deceide to send an engineer to replace the master, I'll stay for another year I promise  Smiley

2 drops in 7 days isn't really enough to warrant us sending an engineer, sorry!

Re: Moving master socket cost? Rewiring other stuff

I did have a recent one Jim
How does the BT test get its result?
my set up a Thomson 585 v7 Release: 8.2.6.5 feeding a SamKnows Linksys via ethernet,  Normally I use WiFi from the Thompson, but my synch dropped on the 25th March.
I waited for it to come back up, but no, Had another query recent so decided to run my desk top via ethernet (via the Linksys), now got my Synch speed back
Why as both routers are on 24/7, surely the BT would not know the difference?

john50,
You may wish to weight that up against the cost of moving the socket. BT engineers can now charge a £100 call out fee  plus £65 per hour for jobs like that.

Certainly looks like it. Shocked
I'd suggest you start your own thread and describe all the wiring in more detail, including posting a larger photo that clearly shows the connections.  Wink

Re: Moving master socket cost? Rewiring other stuff

Years ago just after I got dial up free online, I did have a noisy phone. BT came out and found the junction box on top of pole (about 15 ft from front of house) was full of crud, they change the cable from there to a junction box on front corner of house. Got an extension fitted BT, but they never changed the master junction.
The wire comes from the eves down the cavity wall and out of an air vent in the under stairs larder to the box, they fitted a socket on the bedroom extension, which I think is connected in a junction box in the loft where the wire disapears down the cavity - it is not a master box.  At the same time they ran a short extension through to the hallway and a single socket wher I now have the Thompson and Samknows router.
This was at the time when BT stopped supplying phones and you could buy your own
More than happy with my speed, could probably get more but dont care

The upstaits line is to SWMBO craft room, done by me about 15 years ago

Re: Moving master socket cost? Rewiring other stuff

So i could up my router from the junction box?
also got this interesting email today
When you signed up for your broadband account, we performed a check on your telephone line to give you an estimated speed your line might achieve.
Now that your service has now been active for 14 days, we thought we'd let you know the speed as it stands today, by way of comparison.
Estimated line speed: 18Mbps
Current line speed: 13Mbps
hmmmmm.

I hate to give you some bad news but you will have to parts on top of the £100 call out and £65 per hour.
Last time I had a quote BT wanted to charge me £40 a extension socket

Re: Moving master socket cost? Rewiring other stuff

After tweaking my connection i have made some progress
PPPOA instead of PPPOE
Forced 3.5DB instead of 6.3DB
pushed up my sync up by around 2000kbps
I think thats as much as i can do a part from enabling interleaving which i may try at some point.
