I've had 9 disconnections of DSL today since 11:56, which is very unusual. Usually my line stays up for days and sometimes even for months. I wonder whether there's any work going on in the Bristol area which could account for this?

I am beginning to wonder whats going on, my long rural line has had loads of trouble today and I am sure it was behaving badly yesterday too but I was to busy with other things to look closely, I know this sounds crazy but something to do with the bank holiday ? more people at home, more demand on the interne and POWER! I seem to have very long latencies and power induced REIN issues....... have you tried speedtest for latency ?

I suffered another disconection this morning and it reconnected with the following router stats:
DSL Connection Link Information Uptime: 0 days, 0:01:12 DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 452 / 124 Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 200 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 1.00 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 14.5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 30.5 / 49.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 1.5 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 233 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1,441,773 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 5,898,151 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 2,559 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 51 / 153 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 207 / NA
Needless to say, at that speed the Internet is almost unusable. It took the best part of a minute just to log in to this page.
What is going on?

Your downlink snr is terrible at 1.5dB, you must have a source of bad noise on the line or something badly affecting it.
I would try the modem in the test socket to isolate your internal phone wiring.
Also try listening on your phone using the BT quiet line test on 17070 there should be no crackling

I've had 3 more disconnections since my last post. It's been down more than it's been up. Next time it drops I'll plug into the test socket - I don't want to cause any drops by unplugging anything because that'll just make things worse in the short term.
Current stats:
DSL Connection Link Information Uptime: 0 days, 0:16:03 DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,040 / 3,976 Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 3,768 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 798.00 / 2.08 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 18.0 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 30.5 / 49.0 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.5 / 3.0 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 321 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1,572,848 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 6,356,949 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 749,507 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 32 / 2,623 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 7 / 25,859
So the increased power has helped, if it's stable...
PS - no noise on quiet line test - but the ratio has improved enormously from what it was earlier this morning, and I haven't changed anything this end.
(PPS there still remains the mystery of how I'm clocking up error seconds at around 100/sec.)

Hi there @kjpetrie
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing drop outs. Looking at your connection logs, things don't seem too good.
I'm testing your broadband and this isn't identifying why the drop outs are occurring.
Upstream DSL Link Information | Downstream DSL Link Information | |
Loop Loss: | 30.5 | 49.0 |
SNR Margin: | 23.0 | 5.8 |
Errored Seconds: | 0 | 0 |
HEC Errors: | 0 | |
Cell Count: | 5247 | 8639 |
Speed: | 444 | 3768 |
It's possible we may need to send an engineer to investigate.
I would advise to plug your router into the test socket, and let us know how you get on?

Thanks, I appreciate it's safer to use the test socket and disconnect all internal wiring and equipment to eliminate the possibility I've got a dodgy phone or similar upsetting proper function. However, I'm sure you can also see that the pattern is that it can remain up for days and then become unstable for a few hours, only to settle down for a few more days, which means I'd potentially have to stay without phones and on the test socket for up to a few weeks to come to a conclusion if that were the case.
I'm in the process of selling a house and the agent needs to be able to contact me, so that's not very practical at the moment. Also, if your tests showed nothing it's quite possible we have an intermittent problem that might not be there when the engineer looks. It seems so far to happen during the 12 hours starting early morning (4 am on) which makes me wonder whether it's related to some human activity. Evening and small hours seems fine.

But what would we then be eliminating, other than the faceplate of the socket box? Is that a component likely to be responsible?
The only internal wiring I have is the microfilter, a handset, my router, and a cable to a cordless base station (all plugged into the microfilter). Those are not conveniences; they are necessary to enable me to hear incoming calls wherever I am in the house, so if I disconnect any of them I could miss a vital call at a critical stage in the next few days. We need to eliminate these internal devices, but I can't afford to disconnect them just now.
There is nothing wired into the box directly, so nothing gets disconnected if I take the faceplate off the box and use the master socket instead.
DSL has been up for 22 hrs 25 min now, at around half usual download speed.

OK, I had a DSL drop around lunchtime, so I took the opportunity to plug into the test socket. I'll leave things that way, but I'm not convinced we'll learn much. The pattern shown in the graphic representation looked like an intermittent rather than a continuous problem, possibly related to some temporary disruption, either at the exchange or by EM interference somewhere along the route of the line. It seemed to be mostly during an extended working day (beginning around 4 am and including Sunday) and was concentrated on Wednesdays and weekends. If it recurs we have eliminated the faceplate. If not, I'm not sure we learn anything, because the problem might not recur anyway if it was linked to some human activity which has now ceased. I did check the quiet line test while DSL was off, but apart from a faint brief whine as sync was re-established the line remained noise free.
These are the current stats, as reported by the router:
Link Information Uptime: 0 days, 9:20:07 DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,072 / 3,588 Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 2,328 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 5.00 / 38.94 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 18.5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 30.0 / 49.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 8.0 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 321 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1,638,377 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 6,553,506 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 85,678 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 39 / 210 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 14 / 2,291

Latest figures show profile dropping slowly but speed increasing.

I'm guessing this is a fairly old modem/router, the 585v8? I'd prefer to try a new modem/router before calling out Openreach.
