You can always use the Fix it's to automate the process for you Plus they supply the 1 to reverse the process

Follow the instructions in http://www.plus.net/support/software/dns/changing_dns_vista.shtml as far as step 4.
When you have the screen display shown in step 5 select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP IPv6) and click Uninstall. Then click OK.

This morning, switched the laptop on with wireless enabled - nothing - still local access only and no settings retained.
Plugged the ethernet cable in and I had an instant internet connection and the settings suddenly appeared for both wired and wireless but if I take the cable off I'll lose them all again.  Weird!
Will have a look at disabling IPv6 later.
