I don't know how to turn my wi fi off though. When I try to re connect wirelessly it takes ages.

If you are using the Plusnet Router it is fairly straightforward
Go here http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/lan/?be=0&l0=4&l1=-1
Click on WLAN: PlusnetWireless etc.
Click on Configure
Untick interface enabled

Then connect your laptop to your router with an ethernet cable and it will use that rather than a non existent wifi.
