Re: Just joined Plusnet, CATASTROPHICALLY slow and unreliable

I tried, plugged in the phone and said to him 'there's no dial tone'. He plugged his kit into it, from which eminated something sounding like dialing tone, and said 'Yes there is' - I assumed that my phone was faulty.

@johnwilliamchew

Can you try your phone  on a known working line such as a neighbour or borrow a phone?. You can also buy one from the likes of Argos for £7, it's useful to have one for fault finding or emergencies. No dial tone and slow broadband is a symptom of one of the pair of cables back to the exchange being disconnected.

Having said that, due to your distance from the exchange most people would find that the full possible 1-3Mbps speed unacceptable. I would recommend that if you are not to have years of frustratingly slow broadband that you upgrade to fibre.

I will invest in a new phone at Argos tomorrow, and try again... but I'm having a feeling I might be forced to go fibre.

Re: Just joined Plusnet, CATASTROPHICALLY slow and unreliable

I totally agree with @Baldrick1 . Try the phone at a neighbours - if it is faulty, buy a new one and recheck your own line.

Have you been able to find the router statistics yet? It would still be interesting to see those, although as said, your distance from the exchange makes it unlikkely that you will get any acceptable speed over ADSL.

Is this the first time you have had broadband? If not, who were you with previously and what speed were you getting?

Just moved into the house.

Had broadband in old home in Surrey - totally different circumstances - was getting 3-4 Mbps, streaming TV, downloading software to PC quickly and with no bother.

OK, I'm not a heavy user, but my old broadband gave me everything I needed, and I assumed broadband here would do the same.

And no.
Maybe I'm going mad, or blind, or both - but unable to see how to get router stats.

Without giving your actual address, where are you now? First half of postcode will do.

S71 - in fact, the whole postcode has about 60 houses in it, so if you want the whole of it, you're welcome.

OK, that sounds like the Barnsley area to me - full postcode?

What telephone exchange are you on?

Re: Just joined Plusnet, CATASTROPHICALLY slow and unreliable

OK, thank you. Logged onto router, went to 'help desk' section, all sorts of interesting looking numbers.

I think these are the ones you want:-

- Data Rate 736/608
- Max Data Rate 868/556
- Noise Margin 10.0/6.1
- Line Attenuation 31.5/57
- Data Sent/Received 52.2M/358.2M

When you joined did PN send you a message giving indication of speeds you'd be "enjoying"; if so what
was the number?

Minimum 0.4, but 'up to a maximum' of (if I recall correctly) 3.

Don't know the area that well, but you certainly look 'out in the sticks'.

To be honest, if you can afford it, I would suggest you ask PN what the best offer is they can do for you on Fibre. The details you gave from the availability checker suggest you should get a reasonable speed that way,
