Re: Issues tonight?

Noticed a software update was downloading very slow.......
Wednesday Night just before 11pm, speeds slow, again. Copper
Normally 17mb/s+
Note, all online times an hour out !!
London Server

However, locally, Manchester...

Birmingham

London speed dropped again !

Re-checked London speed

Re-checked Manchester speed, still high (normal)

I appreciate it is a BT problem, not a PlusNet one, but PN have better tech tools than I have !

Re: Issues tonight?

BBC iPlayer test shows good speeds here too...Copper

Re-checked London

Re-checked local Manchester

Speedtest normally defaults to London, and measures 17mb/s+, just checked previous readings.
I rang PN, 11:30pm, they suggest a router re-set.
But I have been getting good speeds for days now via London, apart from Tuesday evening !
As I am using the web now for simple stuff, I'll wait till the morning, and re-set then if measured London speeds are stil low.
Tested a different server down South ( bypassing London ?)
Bournemouth, way down South

London appears to be slow, for some reason.

And the majority of the Olympics events are being held in ............. LONDON !  Cry

Re: Issues tonight?

And we are probably going to need it, with all the "major" BTw Network outages in the last 9-12 months, I have no faith in it's resilience  Shocked

Software updates are very likely to be slowed down as per the traffic management on your account type.
If it's only the London server that's showing the slow speed, and all others are normal then surely it's that speedtest server having the issues?

Re: Issues tonight?

Surely it's probably traffic in the London area ?
Olympics will mostly be in the London area
Appreciate that is out of your control.
And only late evening ?
Or the circuit between the Midlands and London ?

Re: Issues tonight?

It could be that the machine that runs the speed test is overloaded.  Or the link it is on is saturated.  Or any router in between it and you is congested.    Very hard to tell if it's a problem or not!

Re: Issues tonight?

I would think it's a saturated link, around London, bearing in mind the correlation with football matches and the aftermath both nights.

Does any streaming run faster than that anyway? If so can you enlighten me?

It seems to vary, for example in the iPlayer Diagnostics I just ran, one was limited to 10Mbps, and the other two were limited to 20Mbps (Netmeter graph) - there's nothing in the rate limit table for Extra Fibre that is rate limited to 20Mbps, so not sure what's going on there.
Whenever I 'stream-rip' from iPlayer (kind of downloading the streams, which end up in the streaming queue, rather than the download server queue which is traffic managed - see this, they normally come down at 10Mbps, however I have noticed that if I set off another 'stream-rip' at the same time, it will go at 10Mbps aswell as the other download, making 20Mbps total. I haven't tested this in any real depth so can't confirm it is repeatable.
