Chrome is not just DNS fetching...it's performing live web searches as you type.  the suggestions include sites that might have text matching your search for instance.

Have you checked to see if turning suggestions off returns usage to normal levels?

not checked that dude.  to be honest i'm happy to switch back to safari.  chrome was a bit faster but not worth the extra bandwidth ive been eating through each night
