Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi, I've been having a problem with the broadband for about a week or so. Basically when I browse on the internet it takes ages to load any website page or if I want to download music it takes forever. Also I play games on Xbox Live and have noticed a drop in my connections as I appear to lag in my multiplayer games. Plus watching videos in Youtube is impossible. They start playing for few minutes then stops and buffers but then a message pops up saying an error occurred.
I'm currently using the Google Chrome browser, I have tried using Internet Explorer and that is also slow. I have tried downloading Firefox but like I've said before  it takes ages while downloading and then it says its got interrupted?Huh
I have the McAfee installed; I've run scans to see if there's any viruses or malware which there isn't. I've cleared cookies and temp files; nothing has solved the issue. The only thing I can think of is there maybe something going on at your end.
I done a speed test on my laptop (Windows Vista) with the cable. Here are the results:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 6163 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
Here are my router stats:
Uptime: 3 days, 21:19:20
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Channel mode: Fast
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,004 / 8,128
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,128
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0.00 / 397.88
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 11.0 / 22.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 8.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 2 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 6 / 536

Hope this helps. If anyone could take a look I would really appreciate it. Smiley

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi cookiemeltdown,
Both the router stats and the speed results look fine to be honest, just checked the logs for your connection and can see that it's quite stable too. Can I ask if you've noticed these issues being worse or better at certain times of day?

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I'd slightly disagree with Adam, those stats don't look "fine" they look excellent!
You are also showing nearly four days up time so you are not losing the connection. If the problem only occurs at particular times it would be significant.
If possible could you (or a friend) try your connection with another PC?

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I don't have anyone that has a laptop to try the connection.
The problem occurs throughout the day. It's from after Christmas I have noticed this. I thought it might have been the bad weather we had with the strong winds but I live in the south east so I have no idea what is going on.

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

You got 6163 Kbps on the speedtest so the line is OK and it's nothing to do with the weather. As it's all the time it really begins to point to an issue with your PC. Have you changed or updated anything such as virus protection recently?

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I have no idea whether it is included in the version of McAfee but the Web Gateway could be part of the cause.
I suggest disabling McAfee completely and see if the problem goes away

HI cookiemeltdown,
I've just been running some checks and diagnostics. Your account is fine, the traffic management profile is correct, you haven't gone over usage. I've ran a status check which shows your BT profile as 7150 and consistency check passes. I'd suggest running a virus scan, making sure there are no background programs running and making sure you are using a wired connection.

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Has your laptop got sufficient memory for Vista? A friend's Vista desktop virtually ground to a halt (everything, including surfing  :'() after a couple of years but was transformed by doubling the RAM from 1GB to 2.
Other than that and the suggestions already made I can only think of checking that the MTU settings are optimised (and the same on PC and router) and it might be worth disabling any browser add-ons to see if that helps.

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I'm back again ( yes that was quick lol) I think its the McAfee that is the problem. I've turned it off and now I can download music and watch youtube videos properly. So should I uninstall it and then re-install McAfee again?

Uninstall - Yes
Re-install? I suspect you'll get some rather choice opinions on that!
I use Microsoft Security Essentials which is far less intrusive.

Re: Internet being slow. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I was about to recommend the exact same thing!
I use MS Security Essentials at home on a Vista laptop with 2GB ram, which funnily enough had nothing but problems with the previous McAfee software. I also use it on my own PC, and also use MS Forefront Endpoint (pretty much the same thing) on all of the the PCs in work without any issues at all over the past year.
There are far superior free alternatives to McAfee out there, most of which are far lighter on system resources!

My opinion is that I certainly wouldn't choose to re-install a piece of software that I actually had to pay for the privilege of having it jigger up my browsing!!  Cheesy
MSE seems to do the job with no fuss, but then again so did free Avira Antivir before it (although the "nag" window did get on my nerves somewhat!)
