Intermittent connection

Hi,

We have been experiencing problems with our broadband for several days and I have been trying to figure out where the issue is but drawn a blank.

We appear to have intermittent connections and intermittent performance eg today I have been seeing my VPN connection to work drop (today 08:50, 08:55 and last 11:22) and have been happily blaming work 🙂

However, every now and again it is not just me experiencing a problem, my better half also has a VPN connection to work (different software, different company etc) and we do see problems at the same time, likewise my son is playing online games and watching you tube and also experiencing issues.

When not blaming work we have been blaming said son with his games but yesterday we throttled any updates and have been checking if it makes any difference when he isn't active and for instance today we have seen a total loss of internet access but the router still showed a connection.

I have since changed my laptop to a wired connection to rule out wifi and sure enough still seeing issues (11:22 was the last).

Not sure where to look because this does not appear to be device specifc, does not appear to be wifi or lan and the router is not picking up a loss of connection.

I tried going through the logs on the router but could not see anything obvious but it's causing me ear ache so any help appreciated!

Re: Intermittent connection

I came here (community) looking for the "broadband status" links plusnet used to have...I hoping somebody can point them out. My Broadband has gone very intermittent over the past month . The line has dropped 39 times since previous midnight (about 18 hours) :

Found this ===> https://plusnet.servicestatus.net/plusnet/status ...but it looks like it's not being maintained.

Re: Intermittent connection

OK, well I reported mine. They sent a guy out in about 18hours (8am on a Saturday)  he didn't find a fault but swapped the cable (underground) and now it been error free ever since.

If it helps your debugging:

1: Try dialing 17070 and selecting option #2)

2: do so with a wired handset, plugged into the master socket test point (behind the front panel)

3: I used a utility for my modem, yours will probably be different : https://kitz.co.uk/routers/dslstats.htm

   (mine was:  https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,20591.msg418113.html#msg418113  )

4: test for REIN with a radio : https://kitz.co.uk/adsl/rein.htm#REIN_identify

Then finally phone plusnet ...did a great job for me.

Re: Intermittent connection

Unfortunately part of that went over my head.

I've tried a router restart but we are still getting intermittent performance.

yesterday was awful ... I was trying to play World of Tanks and it was unplayable with ping times ranging from then teens to 300.

However, I appreciate that world of tanks is hardly a definitive test. So I went through and made  sure the likes of windows update and ondrive etc was off so nothing should have been downloading.

I then ran broadbandspeedcheckers and the bandwidth was as expected but the first ping time was 260ms (I wish I had taken a screenshot).

I've tried tinker with my the dns settings on my PC to see if it dns but returned to the plusnet dns and repeated for the same result and a third effort gave me 47ms :

You can see I am also getting some interesting upload responses.

Today though it's looking normal :

with 11ms.

Something is not right!

Re: Intermittent connection

We've given up and tried rebooting the router. Average latency is fine but intermittent is awful, 200-300ms reported in world of tanks, ping times to google (which I know has all sorts of reasons why that isn't a good test but literally most ping responses are 9-15 so pretty good and then the occassional 100-300 spike.

My son has been trying to play roblox and that is lagging terribly.

Putting here to make a record really because this is untenable and marries what we were seeing with vpn connections for work use.

Of interest we are seeing you tube working fine (the week before last you tube videos were failing to load / pausing during playing) and it appears to be games that have a problem, I'm sure lots of people will jump on my head becasue I haven't fettled the widget but quite simply the connection isn't working as we would expect so this is making a record for when I call plus net and say we have a problem.

Re: Intermittent connection

So after the router rebooted and a few minutes or so things settled down and appeared fine.

This morning the router decided to drop wired connections and flash it's wifi light like someone had pressed the wps button insptie of no one being anywhere near it, I suspect it has become haunted.
