Inconsistent Download Speeds

My router gives me a sync speed of 10Mbs and generally downloads run at 8Mbs quite quick enough for most practical purposes.

Recently there have been spells where speed falls dramatically down to 1Mbs. Sometimes turning the router (choice of three from Netgear!) off and on again cures the problem, sometimes it does not. I am tolerant but this is tiresome.

Cables in the road were fixed a few months ago and BT kindly fitted me with a new wall box with an inclusive filter. Disconnecting the phone make no difference.

Any suggestions?

Re: Inconsistent Download Speeds

Data through put tests have lots of factors influencing the results. You make reference to BT cabling which can impact sync speed and error rates.

Is the phone line quiet? Please post your full router stats.

Re: Inconsistent Download Speeds

BT cabling is all outside the house and there are no internal additional devices. current stats, back to 7mbps download a shade lower than "normal".

Connection Speed 10359 kbps 1123 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 db 15.8 db

Re: Inconsistent Download Speeds

Fix

Hi @TeeGee,

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing inconsistent download speeds.

I've tested your line and the test is picking a high number of errors. It appears that this is because the SNR margin is too low for the length of your line. I've adjusted this now. Please monitor your connection over the next couple of days and let us know if this hasn't resolved the issue.

For reference, today's test result is as follows:

Re: Inconsistent Download Speeds

@TeeGee,

At the reported synch speed, 7.3Mbps DATA download would be about right.

The low SNRM on the DS could give rise to errors (as reported by Emily) - however I did not see DS MTBE / MTBF figures.  The US MTBE suggests just one error per hour, which is not a real concern.

I suggest that you avoid rebooting the router and see what transpires.  Anther sight of your FULL router stats (including error counts) would be useful ... though if this is Netgear router that might be a tad difficult!
