I was suffering chronic download performance. Pings to google were about 27mS with nothing running but they ramped to 2000mS when any degree of downloading was activated.
Having run the http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ I get the following resuts.
Download speedachieved during the test was - 76 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :4512 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I am (now) plugged into the test socket and nothing seems to be improving.

HI stuartwalker,
You've had quite a lot of drops on your line (see below) which will have caused your profile to drop. Have a look here for some tips on troubleshooting a dropping connection.

You'll need a lot longer than that as a continuous connection before BT will raise your IP Profile.
If your line stays totally stable with few errors JoJo may be able to ask for your noise margin to be lowered which will increase your sync speed further.

OK, There were line interruptions because I've been swapping routers (replaced my Netgear with a Belkin). In proving out the DDNS settings on the Belkin were working I've needed to restart quite a few times.
I noticed the slowness yesterday and I've been swapping around thinking the problem was with the new router. Are you saying that this will have worsened the situation?
And why does the restriction go all the way down to 135kb!!?! That's absurdly slow.

Unfortunately restarts may have been the cause.
For testing DDNS updates if you can disconnect/reconnect through the router interface rather than reboot it keeps sync with the exchange and doesn't have the same adverse affect.

Big increases in sync speed are supposed to mean that the IP profile rises quicker. It doesn't always work like that which is why we say longer and set the expectations low in the hope that you get a pleasant surprise!
