How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

I have a stable fttc connection with about 70down and 18up, however my ping has gone from 5ms to between 15 and 25. Does anyone know if there a way to correct this?

@30FTTC06
show off  Tongue and hey I've just realised if I ping my modem/router I can get those times as well  Grin  Try pinging ntp.plus.net  Cool
@Justin7
My understanding is there is absolutely nothing you can do. The Fibre DLM has a mind of it's own and if it doesn't like your errors up goes the Interleaving. Whatever you do don't be tempted to switch off or reboot the modem with out good reason or on advice as it can make matters worse.
From cases reported on here, DLM can improve things if line conditions are good enough after about 14 days.

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

FTTC DLM largely remains a mystery.  Lack of available line statistics on locked modems just adds to the mystery.
Unlocked and alternative modems help people to understand what's going on.
From my experience, FTTC DLM tends to add 'delay' and 'INP' as well as several possible depths of interleaving progressively if error rates are high, sometimes the sync speed will be reduced at the same time, other times the error correction will be added and sync speeds left high (will also depend on noise margins).
As cabinets become more populated crosstalk between FTTC lines increases and this can show as a gradual decline in speeds (over weeks or months from install) and/or increase in latency as the line management takes steps to keep the line stable.
Your options for reducing error rates (and possibly improving DLM induced latency) are pretty much limited to checking any internal wiring, removing unneeded extensions and possibly double-filtering phones & other devices (with the BT FTTC faceplate this should make little difference but can be worth a try), ordinary ADSL filters work fine with FTTC so a dangly filter can be added to the telephone connection on the FTTC faceplate as well as any extensions.  Alternatively, if latency is critical but speed is less important you could ask to be capped to 40Mb speed, the lower speed should dramatically reduce errors and run with a high SNR margin so it should work with minimal (or no) error correction and therefore minimum latency.
Some latency changes can also come from routing changes on the central networks so would be beyond anyone's control.

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

@Justin7 - do you know when your pings changed ?
Do you have a Thinkbroadband Broadband Quality Monitor graph running to check ?
It would be interesting to see if your increase in latency corresponds with the similar change that happened on my connection.

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

There was someone else on here a few days ago getting nearly 80 meg but high pings - or what I would describe as high pings. I think on VDSL you should be able to get sub 10ms to the beeb.

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

When I first got Fibre I had around 8ms, now dropped:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]

C:\Windows\system32>ping bbc.co.uk
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.251.195] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=119
Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=119

Reply from 212.58.251.195: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=119
Ping statistics for 212.58.251.195:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 19ms, Average = 17ms

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

I used to get about 7ms to bbc.co.uk but after time my sync dropped (in a few steps) to its current 59Mb/s and my (non-standard) modem/router reposts downstream 'delay' of 7ms and Impulse Noise Protection (INP) of 3.0 resulting in my pings being a (usually) consistent 14 to 15ms to bbc.co.uk (still good IMHO).

Re: How to improve Ping on a fttc connection

Thankyou all for your replies. I found it quite interesting and would agree with what has been said - the speed has not degraded much and I understand there is probably nothing that can be done. Thanks for all the info and steering me away from a reboot or looking to have the line reconfigured!
Cheers guys.
