How to check broadband speed

I have been experiencing poor broadband speeds lately, so decided to check the figures. I used several speed checkers which are available on-line, which all gave download speed results between 1.1Mbps and 6.1 Mbps. But when I ran the BTW performance test I got a result of over 15Mbps. I ran them all several times and the BTW tests were always far far higher than any of the others.
What does this mean? Which one can I rely on?

Re: How to check broadband speed

Two things
What are the speeds reported by your router
What does this give www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

Do not see how to get stats from router. Have logged on as admin.

Re: How to check broadband speed

Thanks for signpost. Router shows
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.216 / 18.419
The Thinkbroadband test is now showing 11Mpbs download which is much higher than previously.
I note that there are a lot of evenlog entries on router showing unable to connect. Is this normal?

Re: How to check broadband speed

I've been through some testing on your line and can't see any obvious problems.
The line seems quite short to the exchange with good speeds and no errors showing.
Are the speedtests you're seeing via wired or wireless?

Re: How to check broadband speed

Thanks for checking. It is a wired connection. The speeds showing up now seem to have settled down again at the moment but previously they were intermittently very slow. I wondered if this was due to more high priority users sharing this exchange
