Hi, over the last 3-4 days I have been experiencing bad latency and high pings. Speedtest.net can show pings of 300-500 one minute and then back down to 53 (my normal) the next.
I have a plusnet Thomson router 585v7 but have tried my old Belkin one - both show similar results. I have tried the test socket also.
As i use the connection for online gaming, this problem is rendering the service unusable for anything other than browsing.
Upload and Download speeds are fine.
I'm not sure what my dropout history will look like. Some of the disconnects would have been restarting the router numerous times (and reconnecting everything).
Is there a problem at plusnet that could be causing this?

and just run pingtest.net.... (maidenhead)
Line quality F
Ping 495
Jitter 47ms
Packet loss 0%
Second run (milton keynes)

Ok, after about 11pm ping times are back down....
Latest pingtest.net: Grade A, Ping 51, 1ms Jitter, 0%
Second run:Grad B,59,9,0%
Third run:A,51,1,0%
But I've seen this pattern emerge over the last few days. It gets fine around 10.30-11pm.
Next day, I get home from work and peak times 7-10pm it's awful - unplayable (gaming wise) again.
Am I being throttled for some reason. I expect download speeds to be lower, but I don't expect pings to increase to half a second

Ok, deliberate bump in an attempt for a support person to take a look
I will try again at around 7.30-8.00 tonight to see if things are still bad.
As mentioned last night, after around 10.30-11pm things seem to return to normal for me. If it is still bad (ping wise), I will be raising a ticket, but pretty sure it's not a problem with anything my end.
Is anyone else seeing this extremely bad latency?

For the past week I've been seeing problems, but not exactly the same as you:
http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,93302.0.html
My problem is high jitter (i.e. a large delta between successive pings) and significant packet loss, making serious online gaming and VOIP applications almost unuseable. I'd assumed it was related to the network segment problems from mid-last week, but the service status says this has now been fixed, so I've raised a fault ticket. I too am pretty sure it's not at my end, since I get the same results on 3 PCs, using 2 different routers and plugged unto the test socket.
pathping is showing packet loss in every hop inside PlusNet:
6% lo0-central2.pcl-ag06.plus.net [195.166.130.47]
8% gi7-9-621.pcl-gw01.plus.net [84.93.254.137]
5% te2-2.pte-gw1.plus.net [212.159.0.186]
8% po4.pte-gw2.plus.net [212.159.1.188]

HI swedelong,
What games is it happening on? Can you run a traceroute when it's poor? Any other downloads/updates running at the time? Wireless connection?
It can happen when the network is out of balance but we're not seeing latency or packet loss on our network.
Jojo

Ok, World of Warcraft was showing anywhere between 500ms and 1600ms last night, but has been giving similar response times at these peak hours for the last few days. After 11pm it was back down to 100-200ms.
Speedtest was pinging at 300-500ms most of the time, but again dropped to 50-59ms after 11pm. Although the DL and UL speeds were acceptable.
General response times are bad when browsing. Pages stutter into existence.
I will post some tracert results tonight if it is still bad.
No other dls/uls running.
Wireless or wired seems to make no difference.
I've tried configuring the router to use different plusnet and non-plusnet (google) dns services with no difference. I'm back to using the default ones now.

Ok, seems like its back to normal at peak times....
Speedtest pings @65 and I just got grade A on pingtest.
tracert to bbc looks like this:
Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 23 ms 100 ms 98 ms dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
2 49 ms 51 ms 53 ms lo0-central2.pcl-ag03.plus.net [195.166.128.239]
3 67 ms 236 ms 251 ms gi1-9-321.pcl-gw01.plus.net [84.92.6.72]
4 49 ms 50 ms 68 ms po4.pcl-gw02.plus.net [212.159.1.129]
5 56 ms 51 ms 50 ms te2-2.thn-gw2.plus.net [212.159.0.190]
6 52 ms 51 ms 50 ms rt0.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.239.25]
7 50 ms 51 ms 49 ms 212.58.238.149
8 51 ms 50 ms 52 ms virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138]
Which looks far better than 300-500ms values seen this time yesterday.
Yet to try Warcraft, but early indications appear good. Any idea what the cause was? I've changed nothing.
