Fibre Latency

Hi,
I have been a Plusnet unlimited fibre customer for a few months now. I have always noticed my ping to be high around the 30ms region from the day it was installed. I had a lower ping than this on my old DSL service and other fibre customers seem to be getting pings around 12ms etc.
I have the full 80/20 sync speed so doubt my line is an issue, do some fibre connections just have a higher ping or is there a setting at Plusnet's side that can be changed to lower ping?
Thanks,
Declan

Re: Fibre Latency

Are you running wired/wireless?
Which sites are pinging around 30ms?
What do you get as a ping from speedtest.net and pinging bbc.co.uk (from the cmd prompt)?

Re: Fibre Latency

Running wired over GB network, ping from BBC is around 27ms and Speedtest.net shows around 30ms in most tests.

Re: Fibre Latency

That's quite high. bbc.co.uk should be around 10ms.
Can you run the http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ test and click on 'Further Diagnostics' then post the result?
Just to be clear too, you're not running any services (torrents/usenet/ftp etc.) when doing these tests?

Re: Fibre Latency

Hi Andy,
Network is currently idle.
BTW tester is playing up just now, can get to first set of tests and receive these results:
Download: 73.60
Upload: 12.69
Latency: 39.25
When trying to run the extended tests I receive the following error message:
"The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider."
I tried it a few times and got the same message.
Thanks,

Re: Fibre Latency

I'd expect a ping in the 20s at this time of day. Your speeds look good though. Not sure why you can't get the Further Diagnostics though.
Are you using a PN supplied router?

Re: Fibre Latency

Hi DeclanTM,
Would it be possible for you to try a PPPoE connection and see if there is any difference?

Re: Fibre Latency

Hi Chris,
I have tried using a direct PPPoE connection to my computer and it is not making a difference.
This is my Speedtest.net result:

Ping to BBC is as follows:
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.253.67] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.253.67: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=121
Reply from 212.58.253.67: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=121
Reply from 212.58.253.67: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=121
Reply from 212.58.253.67: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=121
Ping statistics for 212.58.253.67:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 23ms, Maximum = 24ms, Average = 23ms

This isn't a huge issue however I had noticed that most other fibre customers are receiving >20ms pings and was wondering what was going on.

For reference, here are my pings to the BBC from my FTTC connection (from a Linux server via SSH as it's the only thing that's connected via a wired connection) :

Re: Fibre Latency

Weird, don't really know what's going on, seems I am hitting high pings at the Plusnet gateway, don't know if this could be related to the high fibre latency during peak times which is a separate issue as this is even happening during the day.
This is my latest results:

Re: Fibre Latency

Are you running Windows 7/8? Have you tried updating the drivers for your network card?

Re: Fibre Latency

Hi Andy,
Results are the same from all my systems which include:
Windows 8 PC
OS X 10.8 iMac
Ubuntu Server
I have even tried pinging directly from the router and it produces the same results.
Thanks,

Re: Fibre Latency

I would be happy with your ping speeds. I am also on a FTTC connection, and my ping speeds average out at around 40-42ms!
