I would phone Plusnet about your problem.
Ideally, do it at some off-peak time such as late in the evening, unless your phone calls are free.
At peak times, the call waiting times can be enormous!
Meanwhile, try to plug your router into the master BT socket.
Try to find out how to access your router's stats.

I have got into my router (first time for me!) and here are my stats,
DSL Connection
Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 15:22:59
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 2,144
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 13.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 39.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 18.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 26 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 2 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 5,739 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 4,172,785
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 410,005
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 269,979
By the way, I am wireless. I know the line is ok because it has been checked. What do i do now. I have tried abput 10 times to get my speed via BT speed test but it comes up with an error every time.
Thanks again,
Karen

Can you plug the router into the test socket ( see here http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/bbfaults/master_socket_testing.shtml ) and repost the stats, that will
tell us whether any internal wiring is having an effect.
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Quote from: Realblonde I know the line is ok because it has been checked.
Despite what you may have been told, your line is not "ok" in the slightest.
First step is to do as MisterW recommends, and plug your router into the test socket and repost those statistics from your router directly after connecting. this will allow us to determine where the issue may lie.
Once we determine that, we can guide you through various options to increase your speed. Just as an FYI, the theoretical max sync rate on your line is around 7,104Kbps, so around 3x what you are currently seeing.
Cheers
B.

It would certainly suggest though that you have a problem somewhere with your internal phone wiring and/or phone sockets..

I have now plugged my landline phone into the extension in the lounge, plugged the router in the main socket in the hall (no longer in the test socket) and here are my router stats;
Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 0:10:12
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 1,376
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 39.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 17.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 23,123
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 211
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 100
and my speed test is now 1064kbps
I have NO idea what this all means!

I assume that your phone is plugged in via a filter?
It may be worth trying an alternate filter for your phone.
Essentially BT think you have a very unstable line.
Quote SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 18.0
If that 18dB was to come down to 6 or 9 you should see a much faster download speed of 4000+ kbps.
When restarting your router, don't do it more than once or twice an hour (and ideally not at night-time) - BT will think your line is really bad.
Obviously your telephone system is feeding noise into your main socket.
Do you have a filter with two connections - one for phone, one for ADSL?
If you don't mind keeping your phone next to your router you could try plugging both of these into the test socket.
Assuming things stabilise for a few days, the next step will be to contact Plusnet...

I'd like to query though, how many extension sockets you have with phones attached, and do they all have filters fitted to them?
The other question I'd like to ask is, what kind of extensions do you have? are they hard wired (like an engineer would install) or are they the type that you would buy from Argos for a few quid?

Plusnet can request a fairly immediate reset - but only if your line shows several days of stability.
Assuming you have proper internal cabling, it is likely that you can substantially your internal wiring by:-
Cutting a wire (the right one) at the main socket!
If you don't fancy that, buying a special faceplate which screws onto the front of your BT main socket - cost around £5?

Your socket MUST have the BT "pied-piper" symbol on it.
You can get it from http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php (more expensive)
or
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&biw=1680&bih=839&q=i+plate+adsl&um=1&ie=UTF-...
That last URL indicates that you have to remove part of your BT socket and replace it with the "i-plate" and also how it works.
