My cousin said she was having problems with her desktop pc.
She has a tablet, a laptop and a desktop.
I went to her house to test them.
When testing the tablet, it was fast to open pages.
When testing her laptop, it was fast to open pages.
BUT,when testing her desktop it was very slow, sometimes pages would not open (ebay, amazon and the like ).
So i brought her desktop down to my house and i found it to be very fast on my landline.
In fact it was as fast as my own desktop witch is very fast.
She is on normal broadband and her speedtest is faster than mine !
Any ideas ?
I thank you.
Fixed! Go to the fix.

@wufer I assume the desktop is using ethernet for connection? If so, have you tried another cable?
As her other devices work OK, and the desktop performs properly at your home, that would be my first idea - it obviously isn't anything to do with the connection to the wider world.

Thank you jab1
At her house all three are on wi-fi to a Plusnet technicolor TG582n.
I have the same TG582n at my house.I used that in wi-fi same as at her house
So at her house her desktop is very slow.but her tablet and laptop are fast, but at my house her desktop is very fast.
That's what i cant understand !
Cheers

Forgive me for pushing this, @wufer , but it is strange to have a desktop on wi-fi - they are not usually fitted with wi-fi capability. Is it an after-market modification, such as a plugged-in adapter?
If so, I'm more than a little stumped, because then we can't blame the machine, unless I'm missing something obvious.

What wifi hardware is fitted?
Is it 2.4GHz or 5GHz ?
If its using an old implimentation of wifi at 2.4GHz then it would seem slow compared to a modern 5GHz version.

@Bogbody The TG582n is single 2.4GHz band.

Haha John, i think were both stumped then.
Yes its a wi-fi dongle.
I find its a lot better than having a cable all round the skirting board.
But it looks like it might have to be that.
Cheers

Do a broadband speed test on all devices at your place and at your sisters and compare the results. Use wifi and a network cable for the PC.
Her desktop wasn't doing the huge win10 update thats lurking at the moment -- by any chance??? 🙂

@wufer The difference in performance between your house and hers is likely due to one or more of the following :-
1) the positioning of the desktop in relation to the router
2) the wifi channel that the router is using
3) the closeness and channels of neighboring wifi networks
1) probably isnt changeable
2) & 3) can be mitigated by changing the router channel to one that is least used by other networks. Can be determined using a wifi analyser.

@MisterW Thanks for your input (again 😉 ) must admit sitting out in the sun must have fried my brain, because I didn't think of that.

Well all sorted now
I took the easy way out to be honest .
Went to my cousins house and we agreed it would be ok to use a cable in lue of wi-fi
So now she gets over 12Mbps, and we are happy with that
Thank you for your help .
Cheers

Glad you've sorted it, @wufer - but I'm still baffled as to why the dongle worked at your house , but not hers, especially given that you both have the same router.
