Erratic response times at weekends and some evenings, appears as over utilisation?

Hi All,

First post, wonder if anyone can help.

I have noticed that over the past few months my internet connections response times have become increasingly erratic, this results in some services buffering.

Below is a response to pinging google DNS. Whilst this was very poor, a ping to the internal side of my router via both wired and wireless connections resulted in 1ms and 2ms responses.

Below is the output from the BT Home Hub

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

1. Product name:    BT Home Hub
2. Serial number:    +068343+NQ34730769
3. Firmware version:    Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.236.1.2 (Type A) Last updated 12/07/17
4. Board version:    BT Hub 5A
5. DSL uptime:    0 days, 00:56:42
6. Data rate:    1052 / 5072
7. Maximum data rate:    1052 / 5124
8. Noise margin:    5.6 / 6.0
9. Line attenuation:    31.6 / 50.2
10. Signal attenuation:    31.7 / 49.6
11. Data sent/received:    25.2 MB / 930.0 MB

 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

A noise check on the phone line, proved very quiet.

A reboot of the router achieved nothing.

Speed checker shows, when it should be 3.9Mbps and 1.1Mbps when operating as expected. So I am receiving about two thirds of my usual speeds.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

2.75 Mbps download

0.76 Mbps upload

I assume Plusnet are trying to load as many people on to the circuits as possible and this is causing the shocking latency at certain times?

Cheers for any thoughts.

Re: Erratic response times at weekends and some evenings, appears as over utilisation?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I wouldn't recommend pinging Google as they rate limit ICMP, which means that ping requests can often fail because their servers are busy with other things instead of replying.

My tests are detecting a high resistance imbalance fault. This is usually caused by internal equipment attached to the phone line. Can you run through these checks: https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/connection-troubleshooting/

It's also worth connecting your router into the test socket as explained here: https://community.plus.net/t5/Library/Testing-From-The-Master-Socket/ba-p/1322242

If possible I'd also recommend trying a different router and microfilter.

Fix

Hi Gandalf.... I did manage to contact Plusnet and after performing tests to the plusnet DNS and getting the same results. I was directed to preform a BT speed check and to upload my findings in to the fault ticket. Roughly 20 minutes after speaking to Plusnet, I notied that my broadband line dropped and the issue disapeared. I assume Plusnet located a problem and reset my connection to the exchange. Since then the service has been back to normal...

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=57
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=57
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=57
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=57

From the notes on the account, it doesn't look like we did anything to your connection.

But happy to hear it's sorted nonetheless Thumbs_Up
