Email slow down

Hi
Unsure if any can help... over this last week, when opening/running Outlook Express to collect my email, it has become extremely slow.  Before the problem, it took approx. 20 secs running run through my email accounts and download onto my computer... now it is taking minutes 
Can any help offer advice please?
