Download speed

About 3 weeks ago I signed up with Thundernews. I immediately achieved download speeds averaging 650 KB/s.  All was fine until a week ago when the speed suddenly dropped to around 300 Kb/s.  Now today, the speed is 60 KB/s.
I do any downloading during off-peak times and was pleased at the speed I was getting.
I have run several speed tests and these come out fine, so I can only assume that Plusnet are throttling the download speed from the news servers. I have heard reports from other Plusnet users regarding this.  Ok, I agree speeds should be throttled during peak times, but not off-peak.  Why is this?

Re: Download speed

Hi there,
What gateway are you connected to? Do you see slowdowns on any other protocols or at any other times of day?
Usenet services are managed on most of our accounts, certainly during peak times, but off peak speeds should not be a problem, we actively encouraging making use of the quieter periods on the network.

Re: Download speed

Hi,
You may see some improvement if you reboot your router and land on a different gateway.
However, as Mand mentioned, Usenet is prioritised below normal web traffic, which will result in Usenet speeds being slower during peak times.  It simply depends on the amount of traffic on our network.
If you were to consider using our BBYW Pro product, all traffic is prioritised at the highest level.

Re: Download speed

Reset my router 4 times now.  Still lands on the same gateway Cry

Re: Download speed

I'm afraid not.
It's BTs round robin aproach that should randomly assign you to a different gateway.  If you keep trying, you should hit a different one.

Re: Download speed

I am currently connected to the "Telehouse East, Juniper 3" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as pte-ag1.

Re: Download speed

I'm listed as on an "unknown gateway"  what does that mean I wonder?

You are currently connected to the "unknown" gateway.
You appear to be using a connection over the RIN network

It was thundernews.com at fault.

That you're not on the PlusNet network- are you using wireless per chance? If so make sure you're connecting to the right access point

@brianex121
If you are on PAYG using plusdsl2 don't worry about this suggestion - PJ had missed a more obvious possibility.
