Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

This is silly.
As soon as I think the time is right to take a step back and that everything is okay, something changes for the negative again. Okay, so my download speed is still good (around 7Mbps) and that is the most important one, but three weeks plus after my last changes were made to my router installation, and I stopped checking things when everything seemed okay, checking my broadband speeds on a whim a couple of days ago showed my upload speed has dropped from about 0.6Mbps to its previous regular peak of 0.3Mbps and sometimes it is worse than that. I know my previous posting said that it now just seems to be an issue about numbers that mean little to me, and that as long as everything works I'll be happy, and to be honest upload speeds won't affect me that badly, but if I do want to send photos or upload videos or anything like that, 0.3 is half of 0.6 so I'm getting 50% less performance again, and I don't know why. Previously hadn't my upload performance been capped, and the cap was removed?
Here are my latest stats, done through the ethernet cable, not wi fi.

Really not sure why my upload speed has gone like treacle. Any comments would be much appreciated. I know you are probably bored by this by now. I know I am!  Crazy
Off to work again early, as is the wont of my employer lately. Catch up with you later.
Cheers,
Mick.

PERPENDICULAR! Yeah, I get you now!

Sorry about that, my incorrect terminology for which I have no excuse. That implies vertical (up/down) when of course what I should have said was "at a right-angle", as you say 90 degrees
Unfortunately the event log isn't telling us too much as it's only got the normal entries from today, and it looks as though the "interesting" events (certainly the last one) were 6 days, 18:25:04 ago according to the stats, which looks to be around 4pm ish on the 21st. Don't suppose that was when you were taking pictures?
Anyway, there were several losses of sync since the previous stats, I would guess being due to some noise (might have been a bad connection but no certainty on that) but in any event when sync was last regained it was affecting the US more than the DS and hence the poor US speed.
If when you look at the stats next, in daylight hours, at least an hour before sunset, the US SNRM is still around the same level (17.9) and the DS SNRM is above about 6.4, then do a graceful disconnect, powering it off for 10 minutes.
When you switch on again, grab the stats and post them. Hopefully it will be much better.

Hi Chris
No, the 'interesting' events don't seem to bear any relation to when I took and uploaded my photographs to the forum. The photos were uploaded to my computer on April 22nd at about 11am, and I put them on the forum at night when I got in from work, the post going up at 11.23pm on the evening of the 22nd. The 21st was a Tuesday, and at 4pm I was finishing my tacho break at Manchester!  Smiley So as has been typical of late, once I stopped disconnecting my router at night or any time I had no need for it, all curious events seem to take place when I'm either asleep or not at home!
Do the SN margin figures of 17.9/6.6 expressed in db represent noise on the line? I've looked back and previously when I last posted some stats in was on the 15th, and the figures were then 6.0/4.6.
Thanks  Smiley

It's bizarre! Looks like something happened to my router moments after I shut down my computer today just after I posted and just before I went to work, according to the log tonight! I think it is toying with me....

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

It is toying with me.
Just done the BT test and got this....two days I've been seeing no more than 0.3Mbps upload speed, I post on the forum about it, then later that day....

1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download  Speed
6.14 Mbps

0 Mbps 7.15 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 6.14 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 7.59 Mbps
2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.
Upload Speed
0.5 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.83 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.5Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

The USwitch broadband speed checker even gave me 0.6Mbps upload speed.
The SN margin is now better. Here's the other stuff...it is well past sunset though. Do I need garlic?  Undecided

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

You'd need a bit more than garlic  Wink
Your SNRM drops after dusk so you'd end up with slower sync speeds normally. Sometimes you might be lucky and catch it on a temporary up, but when deliberately (gracefully) resyncing to improve speed that job should be done in daylight hours.
Well, a resync obviously occurred, all be it unexpectedly, and that has restored the speeds. You didn't accidentally click on "Restart the router" when you logged out of it by any chance?
The log shows a "Kernel Warm Restart" which means it rebooted for some reason, not resulting from a line drop, nor from a power dip - the latter would have caused a "Kernel Cold Restart".
Whilst you remain in sync, as noise levels increase, the SNRM will reduce. When the noise levels go down again then SNRM increases again.
But if you resync, it always starts with the current Target SNRMs, nominally 6dB (but DLM can change these in 3db steps, yours are still 6dB).
Now if noise levels were high at the point of resync, in other words the SNRM was low (below the Target) just before, then you'll end up with a slower speed. If on the other hand the SNRM is high (above the Target) the you'll get a higher speed. Hope you can follow that. Ask away if it's not clear enough.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Yes Chris, I follow the basics of that  Smiley
I noticed the 'Warm kernel restart' in the event list. I don't think I've seen that before. I can't explain it. The time it happened seems slightly obscured by the fact the clock and date went back to 00.00 Jan 1st, but I also noticed no entry for 'linestate down', which I guess goes hand in hand with the warm restart.
Like I said, the router and/or line into the house is toying with me! Soon as I think everything is okay...bang, it'll drop my speed. Report it...."Oh, I'll spontaneously reboot" it says and it makes a liar out of me! Plus....it knows what I'm saying. Everything I type is transmitted through it! Embarrassed
No I didn't click on 'restart router'. I shut down my PC last thing before getting ready for work, but because I have this fad for not leaving stuff running when its not needed, I turn off my router's wi fi by pressing and holding the light/button combo for four seconds. This turns off the wi fi and I always do it now. The internet and broadband connections are unaffected. Immediately on shutting down my PC I turned off the router wi fi and all the other green lights were on and happy when I left the house. So there really is no reason I can account for as to why a soft restart occurred shortly after my post about my low upload speed, a soft restart that corrected my problem.
People do sometimes say that technology is evolving faster than our ability to understand it. OMG...Sky-Net here we come....   Cool Hasta La Vista...

Yes, as is my habit now, I switch the wi-fi back on when I get in just before I turn on my TV for the evening, in case I want to watch 'catch-up' TV through the internet. And I have not been aware of coming in and finding the wi-fi back on...which would be the case if a full restart had occurred. How very strange!

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Even a Kernel Cold Restart (power off/on) shouldn't cause the Wifi to come back on, the setting ought to be retained in memory. A factory reset would cause it to be on by default. I was just checking, not expecting it to be on.
Just a bit of observation from key entries in the log. There is nothing implied, it's just an observation (perhaps for comparison with similar events) and to help with a better understanding of the log entries.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

At 12:29 BST I was at work, so yet again, nowhere near the router doing its thing.
Actually when I did the soft shut down that you advised, prior to installing my new power lead to the router, I do believe I turned off the wi fi on the router and my laptop, and connected up via the ethernet cable to do this. Of course, I did then pull the plug and about five hours passed before I reconnected. The router booted up as if nothing had happened - the wi fi came on, and the internet and broadband connected up without me having to log into the Technicolor TG-whatever and click 'reconnect'. Whether that's normal I don't know, but it happened.  Huh

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Most of the time you don't have to log-in and click Connect - my wording these days is (and was earlier in the thread) is "you may need to Login to the Modem/Router and click Connect to establish a new PPP session."  It depends on whether a user has changed any settings to stop it reconnecting automatically. As for the WiFi, I'll double check sometime when I decide to power off - not keen to rush and do that! Maybe someone on 21CN on a really good connection (or Fibre) will be able to check that for us.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Changing settings? Hmm...not my thing!  Smiley
Having said that, I did need to change the 'channel' that the wi fi broadcast on as the default one (channel one I think) didn't seem to work that well in my house for some reason. Then I read some threads on the finer points of what channels to use, and found it was best to select one at least two channels away from any you found near you. Tried that, that was rubbish, so by a mixture of trial and error and picking my favourite numbers, I found one that worked well that was only ONE channel apart from one of my neighbours.
I always have to be different don't I?  Wink
Inadvisable selection of wi fi channels could be another justification for turning off my wi fi when not in use!

The one problem with automatic channel selection is it doesn't always pick the best one.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

The problem with picking the best one is that it may only be the best one at certain times of the day or week - using the Wifi analyzer app  on my android tablet nearly drove me round the bend because it would recommend different channels at different times (sometimes even only a few minutes apart.)
Try to find the best compromise, but be prepared to change it again at some future date if it turns out your neighbours have been changing their habits too!  Roll_eyes
