Different Speed Behaviour?

Having followed the various threads on speed issues, the behaviour of my connection seems to have followed a course of its own.
Rough chronology:
Long term ADSL connection speed between 7 and 8mbs with actual speed up to 6.5mbs - measured by several speed checks. This line performance was consistently better than I was entitled to expect from distance to exchange ie attenuation and NM, so technically I have nothing to complain about - however
I enrolled on the trial and was connected in the spring. Immediate connection speed was around 9.5mbs and download speed was regularly in excess of 750kBs and as high as 860kBs!
Gradually over the months the connection speed has dropped away until, when I got back from 2 weeks away last week, it had settled at around 6.5mbs but download speed was still around 700kBs with actual delivery on large downloads at 600+kBs.
Now, over the last few days connection speed has advanced to 7.5mbs but download speed has declined to 550kBs. The Control Panel tells me that my "Current Line Speed" is 5000? (Profile?)
Is there any chance that now or in the future I will crawl back up to the, very satisfactory, connection and download speeds I saw just after I started the trial?
Current (11am) stats:
Connection speed 7645/1102kbs
Line attenuation 44.0/22.0db
Noise Margin 11.9/6.3db
Measured speed (speedtest.net) 570.9/112.9kBs

Hi,
Would you mind trying a reboot and retest the speed for me?
I'm not seeing any reason why your throughput would be poor - the profiles are all set up accordingly.

Hi Tony,
That doesn't sound massively below what I would expect it to be.

Hi James
I agree. However, it is also not very different from what I got before the upgrade. Immediately after the upgrade I was syncing at 9mbs and seeing speedtest.net speeds above 8kBs and similar download speeds. My question is, if it was syncing without errors before is there anything that can be done to restore that state of affairs.
Regards (greedily)
