Detecting FEC errors with Billion 7800N.

Hi,
I am trying to see how many FEC errors there are in my connection.
Can somebody please look at today's router stats from our Billion 7800N router?
I'm unsure how to interepret them. What do I need to keep an eye on please?
Thanks.

Re: Detecting FEC errors with Billion 7800N.

Hi
Are you tweaking that downstream noise margin?

1 million FEC's in 15 mins, that must make the broadband unusable, is the router connected to the master socket?
I would try a default noise margin (6 dB) then see how the line "feels" then.

Re: Detecting FEC errors with Billion 7800N.

The line is still banded at 6652k - the speed will not exceed this value until the banding gets removed. The banded profile has also set a very large interleaving depth of 416. In the past, I would have expected the SNR margin to be high with a banded profile, but I've heard that that doesn't necessarily happen anymore.
FEC count is corrected errors, they shouldn't make the broadband unusable. My line can clock up FEC errors at a rate of a few thousand per second, which in itself is not really a significant problem.
I am thinking the huge FEC counts might be due to the unusually high interleaving depth from the banded profile - and since the banding was due to the router being unplugged, it might be simpler to just get Plusnet to remove the banding, and then it would be easier to see if there's really any other problem with the line operating in a more normal configuration.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I had it lowered to 1.5dB.
I've set the SNR to the default 6 dB to see if the FECs go away....
(One youtube film later.....)
I've repeated the full stats so you can see any ratios.

It's a vast improvement. The FEC' s are a lot lower now Ian. Downstream is lower than I would have wished but it is a big improvement on 6500.

Thanks ejs for that glimmer of hope.
I'll give the faults team a ring at 5am and see if they can get the banding taken off.

Re: Detecting FEC errors with Billion 7800N.

Last Friday I raised a ticket to get my banding taken off.
Can somebody please look at Question #101257128?
Thanks.

Re: Detecting FEC errors with Billion 7800N.

Banding is not currently on your line - WBC 160K - 24M No delay (INP 0) 6dB Downstream, UC No delay (INP 0) 6dB Upstream (ADSL2+)
