Is it safe for a non-techie like me to play with MTU/RWIN settings?  If so, would you suggest any particular settings to try?

I'd start with changing the MTU on your router/PC to 1430.

P.S.  Here are some of the other sites i can't access -
www.meldexinternational.com
www.picturecraftgallery.com
www.westcliffegallery.com

I can reach all these and the Bristol site without a problem.

A couple of other things you can try.....

Flush your DNS cache:
From the Start menu select Run, type cmd and press Enter.  In the DOS window type  ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Clear your Temporary Internet Files and History:
Assuming IE - Select Tools/Options and first Delete Temporary Internet Files and then Clear History.

@dannykos, are you running your traceroutes from a Windows box or are you using a different OS? The reason I ask is because I wouldn't expect ICMP traces to be affected if this is actually down to the dodgy Ellacoya sig.

Re: DNS weirdness

I've just picked up on this thread - I've been suffering from symptoms like these for some days.  Suspected the router, suspected the firewall - but the descriptions here match my symptoms.  Still happening today, though less often.

That would explain it then, AFAIK traceroute on a MAC uses UDP as opposed to ICMP.

Am I correct in assuming that this is intermittent and your traceroutes don't always time out?

Re: DNS weirdness

Bob - as far as you're concerned have the DNS routers been behaving in the last couple of days.
Luckily I haven't suffered any problems - just been reading about others problems

@Bob – not entirely sure what's happening to be honest…  my connection feels like i'm not getting full line speed all the time. When I run a speedtest - it's all over the place, even during the test, fluctuating alot.  Actual results seem ok (not great) - but there's just something not quite right.  Also - trying to play World Golf Tour (wgt.com) is a total nightmare Sad

Re: DNS weirdness

I'm sorry to report that my problems have continued over the past few days, I've just been too busy to post here.
When I couldn't connect to any sites I did a tracert to 212.159.6.9 (the primary DNS that my router said I was using)
and this is what I got:
Tracing route to 212.159.6.9 over a maximum of 30 hops
  1    1 ms    1 ms    1 ms  192.168.1.1
  2    49 ms    47 ms    51 ms  195.166.128.101
  3    56 ms    47 ms    61 ms  84.92.4.241
  4    64 ms    83 ms    75 ms  212.159.1.53
  5    47 ms    68 ms    46 ms  212.159.2.124
  6    47 ms    55 ms    55 ms  212.159.6.9
Trace complete.
You'll see that no names are reported, just IP addresses.
Does this mean that I can only visit sites as long as I know the IP address?!!
I have had to reset my router to get a working connection  (i.e. one that means I can actually
connect to web sites etc), and a tracert on the same DNS IP address now gives:
Tracing route to ptn-cdns01.plus.net [212.159.6.9]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    2 ms    1 ms    1 ms  voyager.home [192.168.1.1]
  2    46 ms    57 ms    *    lo0-plusnet.pcl-ag01.plus.net [195.166.128.27]
  3    44 ms    54 ms    36 ms  gi1-2-803.pcl-gw1.plus.net [84.92.5.57]
  4    40 ms    54 ms    60 ms  vl63.pcl-lb01.plus.net [212.159.2.252]
  5    37 ms    41 ms    36 ms  ptn-cdns01.plus.net [212.159.6.9]
Trace complete.

This is very much still a live problem for me, which is really driving me and my kids crazy.
Can you please provide a reliable fix for this, or at least explain a bit more about the problem
and why it keeps happening?  I really don't see why I should have to reset my router to
get this to work (and then reconfigure my network name and security settings and connection
details etc).
Please, this is getting beyond a joke.

Re: DNS weirdness

@Adriantribe
We're not seeing this problem for anyone else at all currently and there doesnt appear to have been a problem since Sunday afternoon.
Is your router/network card having its dns servers assigned manually or automatically?

Re: DNS weirdness

Hi Jameseh,
Thank you for the swift response.  The DNS settings are picked up by the modem/router automatically
when it connects.  I have explained previously that I use my laptop via three different connectivity
providers (PlusNet at home, 3 mobile on the go and a network at my workplace during the day), so
I have a feeling that it may cause problems if I hard-code DNS settings.  What do you think?
Thanks again for your help.

Re: DNS weirdness

I have a weird problem.  I can't resolve www.go-ape.com at any time using plusnet's DNS servers, but I can using OpenDNS.
