Re: DNS weirdness

I'm not 100% sure tbh but will try and find out for you. I think it was a separate issue. Either way we've not seen a recurrence that I'm aware of since yesterday.
Edit: asked the guys who've been looking after the investigation and the consensus is that the failed health checks were the result of something else. Having said that we don't think it's massively service affecting when it does happen as it's always the TCP listener that fails and not UDP (which is what the vast majority of DNS requests are sent using anyway).

Still no update on the service status which was due at 13:00 today.
I've been on and off this afternoon, believe it may have happened again twice. Can't be sure, guess we'll see how the evening pans out.
**EDIT** Just run my traces again, these may interest you, alot better than yesterday and so far this evening i've had no problems XD:

Will update it now, judging by the lack of noise this evening it looks like we might have fixed the main cause of the problems.

Re: DNS weirdness

Apologies - i'm not technical and don't understand 95% of what's been posted here.  I do, however, appear to have the sort of problems that have been discussed i.e. i can't access a number of websites.  I first reported this problem on Tuesday, since when you have run a 'dial test' (is that the right term? - i had to switch my router off overnight) and also got me to send copies of 'tracert' results.  I have also been asked to change the DNS addresses for my router.
So far, none of this has had any effect.  Following this evening's post that the problem may be cleared up i've tried the websites i've been having problems with but i still can't access them.
So - please don't give up trying to sort this out just yet!

Have you flushed your DNS cache?
Start, Run and enter "Cmd" and click OK
In the command box enter
ipconfig /flushdns

Re: DNS weirdness

jelv - thanks for the tip but i've just tried that and it's had no effect.  Anyone got any other ideas?  One of the sites i can't access is my daughter's Uni (www.bristol.ac.uk) - i'm supposed to be checking for emails about her choice of courses for next year.  At this rate she'll end up with the courses no one else wants to do!

My friend who is on a business account is also experiencing network time-outs . He can't even visit our own websites. He is seriously considering moving to another provider now because the service is laughable and for the money paid he is getting a bad service.

Re: DNS weirdness

fwiw, I also had intermittent trouble reaching certain (not all) websites this morning.  eg. bbc.co.uk
So I reset my PPP connection an hour ago.
I was using Juniper 1 gateway for past couple of days with no real issues until this morning.
DNS seemed to be going thru the PTN load balancer
Now on Juniper 10
All seems okay now.
DNS seems to be going thru the PCL load balancer. (I understsand it is now fixed as of yesterday)
fwiw, my web browser has no trouble loading  www.bristol.ac.uk [137.222.10.246] homepage.

Is the problem intermittent is this site always inaccessible? If it's always inaccessible then I doubt it's anything to do with the intermittent DNS issues we were seeing. You might want to look at tweaking your MTU/RWIN settings as that can sometimes prevent you accessing some sites.

It's intermittent in the sense that i can sometimes (maybe 1 out of 5 tries) get a version of the homepage to load but it's unformatted and has no graphics at all.
This problem started about a week or so ago - up till then we'd had no problems

Re: DNS weirdness

P.S.  Here are some of the other sites i can't access -
www.meldexinternational.com
www.picturecraftgallery.com
www.westcliffegallery.com
Is it safe for a non-techie like me to play with MTU/RWIN settings?  If so, would you suggest any particular settings to try?
Thanks for help in trying to resolve what's becoming a rather annoying issue.
