DNS service problem?

Hi,
Am I alone in seeing DNS service problems from 212.159.6.9/10 this morning from 07:11 onwards? Sometimes just 1 of them will do a DNS resolve, sometimes both, and sometimes neither. At all times, both servers remain pingable.

Re: DNS service problem?

We seeing an uncharacteristically large number of calls coming in too. There's nothing untoward looking at the graphing mind you and all the caching IPs seem to be responding to queries for me. I'm about to get an internal problem raised as something's definitely not right.

Re: DNS service problem?

Bob,
My impression is that each server gives a DNS answer once, then fails to do so for the next 60 seconds, then resolves again. Remains pingable all the while.

Re: DNS service problem?

I'm getting DNS issues too. Couldn't even navigate to the Plusnet support pages without looking up an alternative DNS server on my phone.
(the openDNS address is 208.67.222.222)
Now browsing is fine.

Re: DNS service problem?

Looks like it's isolated by gateway.  I hopped around a bit, got onto thn-ag1 and it's working fine.

Can you explain what the negative values on the graphs represent Bob?
Surely a graph measuring response times cannot return a negative value unless something is awry; a response time of -10ms indicates that the DNS box sent the answer 10ms before the monitoring server requested it.
Architecturally speaking, where does your DNS monitoring sit? I'm assuming that it sits on your internal network, and queries across the same, where ideally it would be on an ADSL line somewhere, reporting and representing what we all see.

It's not an isolated gateway, I've had problems on several (not just today).

Re: DNS service problem?

Not AN isolated gateway, but isolated BY gateway.
i.e. it works ok on some gateways, but not on others.
It looks borked on the majority though if Liams experience is indicative.

You sure Bob? I've just looked and noticed on some graphs that the median value peaks were the highest figures displayed. The maximum values are right off the scale (which is probably to be expected) which makes seeing the short-term trend a bit difficult.

Re: DNS service problem?

Bob,
My impression now is that there is no DNS resolution at all from either server.

I'd not spotted that - so it looks like there are two fairly significant problems with the graphs that supposedly show everything to be fine...

Re: DNS service problem?

Disappointing that this is still a problem.  I've now had 2 referrals ring my mobile asking if there is a problem.  It's not Plusnet they call, it's me!
Anyhow...  I'm on thn-ag1 and it works fine now.. took about 5 or 6 reconnects to find a gateway that worked though.
Disappointingly though, the problem published to the portal hasn't been updated for 2 hours and is still showing the status "To Be Assigned".
