DNS problems?

Hi,
I don't seem to be able to perform any DNS lookups other than via Plusnet's own DNS servers.
For example, the following Linux commands work OK with Plusnet's DNS servers:
dig @212.159.13.49 www.google.co.uk
dig @212.159.13.50 www.google.co.uk
However the following Linux commands all hang with Google Public DNS servers and OpenDNS servers:
dig @8.8.8.8 www.google.co.uk
dig @8.8.4.4 www.google.co.uk
dig @208.67.222.222 www.google.co.uk
dig @208.67.220.220 www.google.co.uk

Re: DNS problems?

Are other people still able to use non-Plusnet DNS servers? To be clear, the connection to the servers is not the problem: I can ping them OK, but I cannot use them for DNS lookups.
It is almost as though Plusnet is blocking DNS requests to non-Plusnet DNS servers.
Is it something to do with Plusnet SafeGuard? Its FAQ does mention DNS.
Should I raise a support ticket?

Re: DNS problems?

Have you got Plusnet SafeGuard enabled?
At a guess this should disable other DNS servers, to prevent circumvention.

Re: DNS problems?

No, my Member Centre says Plusnet SafeGuard is off.

Safeguard uses a different pair of DNS resolvers.
What router are you using? Is the Plusnet server Firewall enabled (although I don't think the latter should make any difference).

Re: DNS problems?

This morning other DNS servers are working normally again, without me having changed anything.
To answer your questions, my router is a Netgear DG834G, and my Broadband Firewall is off.

Re: DNS problems?

Odd.
Did you try any sites other than Google when the problem was evident?

Re: DNS problems?

Yes; I couldn't resolve any host names until I switched from Google Public DNS to Plusnet. After that I was able to resolve all host names.
Today things are back to normal.

Re: DNS problems?

Very curious.
If it was just Google-hosted stuff then the difference might have been explained by the fact that we have Google caches on our network.
Aside from that, I'm out of ideas. Shout up if it happens again.
