Morning all
I have been to start>>run...and typed in  " telnet 192.168.1.1"   the command window opens then disappears  not sure the reason for this.
or what to do next. ?

You need to run 'cmd' to get to the command prompt. Then you type 'telnet 192.168.1.1' . You'll get a prompt for the router login password.  'show adsl' will bring up some more stats.
Watching this thread as I'm thinking of having a go at tweaking my connection as its lower than predicted.

Re: Confused: why has my speed dropped on ADSL2+

The following guidance might also be useful.
To copy information displayed in the command window to the clipboard (for later pasting elsewhere) right-click in the window then
click Select All (to do what it says on the tin), or
click Mark, point to the left-hand margin of the line where copying is to start, press and hold the left mouse button while dragging the pointer to the right-hand margin of the last line to be copied. The area selected should display as black text on a white background.
Right-click in this area; the text will revert to white on black with the copied text on the clipboard.
Paste this into Notepad, or as required.

Re: Confused: why has my speed dropped on ADSL2+

Try 192.168.1.1
169.168.1.1 isn't a valid address.

sorry about that first command promt, i sent the wrong one, when i did put the right ip in , the firewall blocked it but all ok now.
thanks again for all the help. I'm learning valuable lessons here, Oh!  i  knew how to cut and paste
, just didn't know how to put the stats in from router..lol
David when i changed the details in Dr TCP  the adapter settings said ........microsoft TV/Video connection....changed that to marvel yukon....and saved it...when i went back it changes back to microsoft TV/Video connection....all the time... is that correct ?
anyway gonna be patient and quiet now ...see how it all pans out...
thanks again Barry

Yes, Dr TCP doesn't remember settings itself, it picks up values from the Windows registry. For the adapter setting it always shows the first one on the list and if a later one is in use that always has to be selected. The RWIN setting will be taken from that saved in the registry last time.
For setting your router MTU via the telnet interface the parameter name looks as though it is the Maximum Segment Size (which is 40 bytes smaller than the MTU). However online support information confirms that subtraction is done internally and the value to be specified is actually the MTU.
If you type wan ppp_mss ? (with the question mark) at the telnet prompt the current MTU value 1442 should be displayed. To reset it to 1500 you need to type wan ppp_mss 1500 to set the MTU to 1500. Then restart the router to make the new value take effect.
I would also restart the PC after the router reconnects, though strictly that might not be necessary.
For the record please attach the rectangular image of your router stats immediately after restart (I think running show adsl at the telnet prompt gives more complete information), then run a DSLReports Tweak Test after the settings have been changed and post the results URL.

Re: Confused: why has my speed dropped on ADSL2+

Hi Barry,
Have you tried installing and running Dr. TCP on your computer?
Try using an MTU of 1430 (and also on your router) and a receive window of 55600 and just see if it makes any difference.
You'll need to reboot the computer and the router after making the changes.

Re: Confused: why has my speed dropped on ADSL2+

Hi James, yes i have run Dr TCP as advised by spraxyt further up....and changed the MTU from 1442 to 1500, and the RWIN to 256960,

Re: Confused: why has my speed dropped on ADSL2+

If the box on the right of the adapter name contains a value smaller than 1500 I suggest leaving the settings as they are for the moment.

That box was blank so I left it alone
