Circa 2006 Speedtouch 580 Router and WPA

Can any-one please advise?
My neighbour (also a PN customer) has recently bought a new W7 laptop. For years he has been connecting to the internet via a Speedtouch 580 wireless router from his old XP laptop using WPA-PSK encryption. The new one refuses to communicate. I also find that this router will only communicate with my W7 computer if I turn all wireless encryption off and run it unsecured. Is it me? Do I need a firmware update (it is currently at version 4.2.7.25)? If so, where do I get it, I can find nothing on the Thomson/Technicolour website. Alternatively is it a case of chucking it in the bin and starting again? Having just forked out for a new laptop this is obviously not his first choice!

I don't know if this is any good, but there is a seemingly more recent version of the firmware here http://www.speedtouch.net.nz/580seriesFirmware.htm
That's a New Zealand web site but no mention that the firmware is country-specific.  However try it at your own risk.
