Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

Hi all, I hope I will find here an expert to help me Smiley I cannot find any options in router's interface.
The problem is that there are 4 tenants in a house and when we all are at home and if someone of us uses download software such as Torrents, the internet slows down significantly.
As I am the one responsible in a house I kindly asked everyone not to use torrents, especially when more than 2 people are at home. Anyway I do not understand myself: what the hell people download so much to keep torrents on all day and night?Huh
Anyway, still some of people does not listen to me and ignoring my request keep torrents on.
I wonder if there is any way to block torrents via router so it would be fair as none will be able to connect and slow down internet speed? or at least limit internet speed on some laptops that are connected wirelessly?
My router is Technicolor TG582n
Thanks a lot in advance for your help

Not on the router, but in your member centre you can activate the "Surf" option that blocks popular p2p ports, which might help to some degree

Check that they have set a limit on the Torrent upload speed. About 1/10 of your download speed would be appropriate.

Re: Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

If you are on ADSL2+ it would also be worth checking your upload speed is uncapped. Post your router stats, this post explains how to get them, and check the upload speed is higher than 448k. Unfortunately if you only have ADSL1 available, upload speeds higher than 448k are not available for free.
The torrent upload speed limit should probably be set to about half of the total upload speed available in order to leave plenty of spare capacity for the other users.

If there are multiple Torrent users in the house that half should be divided by the number of users.

Re: Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

Is changing to a different router an option?  Setting up port blocking or, more elegantly, QOS rules are features that can be implemented using more advanced routers than the 582n...

Try turning off upnp, that should slow down p2p a bit but it will also hurt gaming.

I'm guessing they connect wirelessly - if you could connect wired just turn the wireless off when their use is interfering with what you want to do.

Re: Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

Would port forwarding a large port range (say 40000-60000) to an unused IP (outside of the DHCP assignment range) block them?

Re: Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

there is a really simply solution to all this.
as the OP is the person responsible for the account, then simply block any device that fails to comply why any rules you put in the place.
the technicolor router lets you block certain devices.
they will soon start to comply if access is denied to them.

... and if they moan point out that they have the option of having their own phone line and broadband!

Re: Can I block Torrent downloads in network? (Router: Technicolor TG582n)

You don't need any ports forwarded for bittorrent to work. Trying to slow down the download by disabiling UPnP automatically set-up port forwarding might not have the desired effect, if the downloading takes longer but the uploading continues for the same time.
The command line interface to the 582n, accessible via telnet, could be used to configure QoS rules or presumably to block large ranges of ports both incoming and outbound - but it's not particularly user friendly. Perhaps see http://npr.me.uk/ipqos.html
