I have just tried to download a TV programme that I missed last night and the download speed was shown as 907Kb/sec. At that rate it would have taken about 90mins to download the programme, so I gave up. I tested my broadband speed and here is the result.
I think there could be something wrong at your end.
Thanks,
Alex

Your speeds are well below what they should be. From you connection log's(see below) it appears that you are turning your router off. This would have an affect of reducing your speed, as the exchange you are connected to has software that monitors your connection and will reduce your speed if it see's an unstable line.

If possible I would leave your router turned on, your speeds will then pick back up.

Chris,
I have been turning my router off overnight for several years in an attempt to prolong its life. Your records will show that I am on my 3rd of 4th router and it is a nuisance when it packs up after only 18 months on the average. I have a second router conneted to the TV downstairs. I have been turning my main router off several times a day recently, whilst I was playing with Raspberry Pi downstairs, so that could be the reason. As a stand-by computer Raspberry is totally useless, so I will not be doing it much in the future.
Thanks for instant response.
Alex

For example, this morning everything was running fine at 5Mb/s , until around 1pm, when it dropped to around the same sort of speeds that Hamilton36 is getting. This has been going on for around a week now, with the speed always picking back up to around 5Mb/s without any action being taken at our end?
We also switch off out router at night, however, we have been doing this for a very long time without any noticable adverse effect on broadband speed.
Any other ideas?

I would suggest leaving your router turned on, they are designed to be left on. This would appear to be the reason that your speeds are so slow. I will keep an eye on your connection, you should see that your speeds will pick back up once you have a constant connection.
@syates
Ran a check on your line and it is showing that you are currently getting just over 1MB/s, is there any other electrical device that is on when you experience the slow speeds? I can you have started to raise a fault. The best thing to do would be to complete the diagnostic questions and this will formally raise a fault for us to investigate.

I have corrected your statement.
What can damage electronic equipment is frequent significant changes of temperature. When you turn it on it goes from ambient to operating temperature which could easily be a 20oC change, and then back again when you turn it off.

Quote from: chrispurvey I've checked your line again and have got the same results as you, your profile has been banded. This is due to the disconnections you have had, our fault's team are testing your line and will update you with their findings.
If you need me to do anything please let me know.
Chris
Thanks Chris. I'm still waiting for any response to my ticket. I wasn't aware we were getting frequent disconnects, apart from the slow speed, things seemed to have been stable. Could be some damage to the line caused by the storms last weekend though?

Also if possible try and refrain from updating your fault ticket when it is with the faults team as this can sometimes delay the response. If it is of importance then by all means please update.

I've left the router on since I put the ticket in. I only updated it as if they needed to contact me, I wasn't at the "preferred" contact number... had to drive 50 miles to get a decent broadband connection

Still haven't heard a peep from the faults team, it now being well past the 24hrs they said they would get back in... they haven't even updated the question so I know it is actually being looked at (not that I don't believe you Chris, just it would be nice to have some indication of movement on the ticket), in fact the wording on the question implies that it isn't being looked at, and is 'parked'?

It can take 48-72 hours for us to get back in touch with you. This is in line with our Service Level Agreement, however we do endeavor to try and get back in touch as soon as we possibly can.
Please accept my apologies for the delay.
