Still disconnect the wires from 3 & 4. The other socket is obviously connected to the line as a master should be, otherwise the Test socket would not have worked.
Now this supposed extension socket that has a test socket behind, yet seems to have two lots of terminals on the removable plate?
There should be a quick way of checking how this is wired - plug a filter and phone into the test socket and see if you get dial tone. Dial 17070 and check the number is the same (your number) if you do get dial tone.
My guess is that this is a pre-2007 master socket and faceplate - have a look on this page if it seems different.

That's one minor worry out of the way!

Done, and OK

Yes, it looks pretty much like that.
All that remains is to remove the wires as suggested - I'll get round to it later.
Meanwhile, I've put both faceplates back on and am working normally.

It probably wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference had the second test socket been live as you have such a short line to the exchange as long as the wires were disconnected. As it is, because this second socket is a master, you still have a bell wire connected to the line via the capacitor in this second socket.
If you'd removed the wires, the stats when you reconnected the modem/router would most likely be exactly what one would expect to see.

I really don't want to do any irreversible damage here.

Well for 3mins 10 secs, the errors are brilliant Being a little more serious it's how the error count goes from now. As you've eliminated any potential pick-up of interference from your internal wiring, then I'd expect the count to be lower compared to previously and I wouldn't expect any drops in connection although when you started the thread you had been up for nearly 20 days.
However, I'm a little surprised that the sync speed is not a touch higher but as Interleaving on your line is turned on, some old 20CN Exchange Line Cards won't allow the highest speeds. (Interleaving is a type of error correction btw). If the line seems stable with a lower error count then I think an SNR rest would be worth trying as this would reset the line when it might sync at the highest speeds and give a 7 or 7.15Mbps profile.
With the current sync speed your profile is 6.5Mbps, so download speeds should be upto that (subject to any congestions issue at any instant).
Post up some more stats later on this evening or when convenient after that.

What's an 'SNR reset' and is this something I can do?
As requested, I'll post some more stats later on
